Some of the Greatest Mentors of All Time by Austin

Some of my favorite characters of all time are the wise old mentors that look weak at first, but end up by kicking butt up to the very end. They most often have the strongest hearts, most powerful minds and are the most inspirational. There is usually something about their personalities that make them the best kind of characters. They typically have white hair, long beard, glasses and sometimes a good staff. Even if they do not share those character traits, mentors are always wise way beyond their years. Wisdom is sometimes the most important part in a good book. Wisdom and Cleverness. Nobody could say that Yoda is not wise, that Dumbledore is not clever.

I have read a lot of books. I would say that most books have a Yoda or Dumbledore. Here are my top five mentors.

1. Albus Dumbledore ~ Harry Potter

"To the well organized mind, death is just the next great adventure."

2. Gandalf ~  The Lord of the Rings

"A wizard is never late; nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to"

3. Obi-Wan Kenobi ~ The Star Wars Trilogy

"These are not the droids you are looking for."

4. Brom ~ The Inheritance Cycle

"There's a reason why we're born with brains in our heads, not rocks."

5. Yoda ~ The Star Wars Trilogy

"No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try."

Those are some pretty great characters. Some of the best - even if I do say so my self. They all have something in common. They all look old and weak (at least they do in the books) but there is much more to them that meets the eye.

I have given you my favorites. Now, you give me yours. Comment and tell me...

Your favorite mentor out of a book.

The reason Why.

AND your favorite quote from them.

I will then randomly choose a winner, who I will send a replica of the Elder wand  from Harry Potter that I made. I'm doing the finishing touches right now.

"The wand chooses the wizard... it's not always clear why." - Ollivander

~ Austin

  1. Dumbledore is my favorite mentor because not only is he awesome and powerful, but he is more than just a little nutty. Proof of that fact is in one of my favorite quotes from him,

    "Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"

Those are the words of excellence.

  2. "You can't go around building a better world for people. Only people can build a better world for people. Otherwise it's just a cage." Snapped Granny.

Granny Weatherwax from the Discworld books--homespun brilliance!

  3. My favorite mentor from a book has to be Dumbledore. One reason i like him is because he's not perfect. He admittedly makes and then feels grief from the mistakes. It takes a big person to admit that they're wrong and that their mistakes have been costly. Yet he never lost faith in Harry or anybody-else.

He started out power hungry. Wanting to make the world in his and Grindelwald perfect image. Along the way he had a revelation and changed. He learned the hard way that life isn't always easy. That bad things happen. It's your choice in hard times that define a person. Not your blood or who or what you are.

Dumbledore's not afraid to give second chances to people if they make mistakes. He's also not afraid to give first chances as he did when he allow Remus Lupin to attend Hogwarts. Something that Remus admits no other headmaster would have allowed.

He states all of these things when he says

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

"You fail to recognize that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be."

My favorite quote of his has to be "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." I love this quote because it's truth for all occurrences. All the bad times a person goes through. That no matter how bad things get there is always room to find something happy. Even if that happiness is merely that a person is still alive and intact. ^^

  4. One of my favorite quotes from Dumbledore is "Don't pity the dead Harry, pity the living. And most of all those who live without love." sorry if it's a little off I'm doing it from memory...

(don't worry Austin I'm not entering the contest)

  5. I've always had a soft spot for everyone's fave werewolf (and no, he's not from TWILIGHT) REMUS LUPIN. I love his gentle demeanor, even if he does go a little wacky in the last book. I mean, every hero/mentor has a weak moment.

Here's a super quote from POA...

Snape to Lupin: "Possibly no one's warned you, Lupin, but this class contains Neville Longbottom. I would advise you not to entrust him with anything difficult. Not unless Miss Granger is hissing instructions in his ear." [...]

    Professor Lupin raised his eyebrows.

"I was hoping that Neville would assist me with the first stage of the operation, he said, and I am sure he will perform admirably."

    Go, Lupin! :)

  6. Atypical Girl: Love Remus from books 3-5 as well. I think he sticks up for Neville because he has been picked on so much in his lifetime as well.

  7. Definitely Dumbledore after all the series end.I thought he was mean he let Harry faced all the hard circumstances and still hate him as he ignored harry and his godfather died.but he know what's he's doing, proving he did everything on purposes.
