The Hunger Games/Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

The Reading Teen Crew is gearing up for our Mockingjay Read-a-thon and giveaway, and realized that we've never actually written a review for The Hunger Games.  This is the ONLY book that our entire group has read, so we thought it would be fun to give you all of our opinions.

I just reread The Hunger Games Saturday.  I'm preparing for Mockingjay.  I have to say, it was even better this time.  I adore this book.  Other than the Harry Potter Series, this is my favorite series.  The world that Suzanne Collins has created is absolutely amazing.  This book is so thought-provoking, exciting, intense, and emotional.  I think it was even more emotional this time for me because I feel like I know the characters and really feel for them.  I just want to wrap Peeta up and put him in my pocket!  (haha  Peeta-pocket...I literally just realized I said that) I LOVE him!  He is so good to Katniss!  And I'm pretty sure he's the smartest character in the entire book.  HOWEVER, I'm still Team Gale.  I think deep down that Katniss is in love with him, and they're meant to be together.  I'm hoping to see more of Gale in Mockingjay, and I guess we'll see who, if anyone, she chooses in the end.  I'm just praying that Heidi Kling (author of SEA) is wrong, and Suzanne doesn't kill Katniss.  She's convinced that's what's going to happen.  I don't know if I'll be able to handle that!  I might go into a depression.  If you haven't read this series yet, YOU MUST READ IT!!  ~ Andye

I'm just gonna cut straight to Peeta. I really don't understand why everybody is in love with Peeta. He's so annoying! I mean if he really loved Katniss, he wouldn't bug her all the time about it. That's all he does, and she ends up feeling sorry for him and questioning her "love" for him. Katniss is obviously in love with Gale, and honestly, I think Gale is WAY sexier than Peeta. Also, I think Katniss feels a connection with Gale that she doesn't with any other guy. Like how they hunt together, Katniss and her father did that before he died, and I think hunting with Gale reminds her of memories with her father. And hopefully Gale has a bigger part in the story than the previous books. This might sound insane, but I imagine Cinna British. I don't know why, but every time I read these books I can only think of Cinna as British. I've read The Hunger Games seven times, and I have to say, they NEVER get boring! Every time I get the same emotions I did the first time reading them, the excitement, action and cleverness in the story line never fail to entertain me. These books are a must read!  ~ Abigaile

I'm not quite as bitter about Peeta as Abigaile is.  I LOVE Gale and don't understand people who are Team Peeta but I do think that Peeta has some good qualities... deep, deep down.  That part aside I love these books they are amazingly written and completely surprising, Suzanne Collins is fabulous and I have no idea how she could think up this incredible story-line.  So far my favorite is Catching Fire but I'm hoping that Gale will (finally) get a bigger part in Mockingjay and if he does then that would probably end up being my favorite, and honestly The Capitol can go kill Peeta (please don't kill me for saying that!) I don't understand why she kept going back to him!  But I am completely prepared for Suzanne to introduce a whole new guy and have Katniss end up with him, I guess what I'm trying to say is  ANYTHING could happen in Mockingjay and I can't wait to find out what does!  ~ Kit

It's been a while since I've read The Hunger Games. Well, I will go back from time to time and reread a few chapters here and there. I would have to tell you that if you haven't read it, you are missing an amazing opportunity. The writing, the non-stop action story line and the romance, this book has it all.
I'm not really sure if I'm team Gale or team Peeta. Both guys really had their strong points and when I imagined them in my head, both are VERY goodlookin' . I will say I was definitely team Katniss, she is beautiful, she doesn't need all the girly glamour and makeup to pull it off either. Katniss is totally kick-butt. Who Katniss ends up choosing... Gale? Peeta? I will not know until hopefully Tuesday (MockingJay August 24th). I will have to add that Katniss could hold her own against Scarlett (Sisters Red ). That I would like to see. It is rare to read about a strong, independent, non-whiny woman who can keep up with the guys and survive on her own. The Hunger Games will empower you as a female. As a male... dying to know Katniss!
I hadn't been reading for entertainment for very long when Abigaile, my daughter told me it was... "to die for." So when I decided to read it, I could not put it down. I faked sick and stayed in bed all day, I don't do that often.I know I'm gushing about this book but believe me when I say YOU should read it. Without a doubt.  ~ Amy

The reason that I like the Hunger Games is that it has a great story, imaginative characters, and is altogether a great series. I would not go as far as to say that it is my favorite besides Harry Potter, but that's just me. I am highly anticipating the final installment in this epic trilogy and have been for a very long time. I read the first book before both my mother and my sister. It took many ninja-like tricks and quite a few good hiding places to manage this, seeing as we only had one copy at the time.
As I am the only guy on the team, I have to give you my guy's point of view on the series. It has quite a bit of violence, (Something the guy readers like) survival, (Another thing that guys enjoy) and the sheer fact that some girl shoots a squirrel cleanly through the eye with a bow and arrow. Dude.
This is a great series, even for guys. No matter how much you hear about how there is so much romance in the book, I am telling you now that you can pretty much ignore it all (except for crucial story moments...) and keep on reading until you get to another action scene, which, I promise you, there will be many of.   ~ Austin

If you've read The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, make sure you go grab Mockingjay tomorrow and READ with us for a chance to win some cool MJ stuff!!  We're so excited about this book!

MockingJay - Tuesday, August 24, 2010

  1. Can't wait for your Read-A-Thon! I linked to this post in my Mockingjay Madness entry. Here's a link if you're interested:

  2. Cool post. I like all your different opinions.

  3. I'm agree with Abigaile about Peeta ! I really don't understand why everybody love him... TEEM GALE :D !

  4. Mockingjay is one of Caterpillar's favorite books ever!!!!

  5. What?! Am I the only one in love with Peeta? (Besides Katniss, of course...) Haha anyways, it was cool how you all wrote a mini-review and contrasted your differing opinions. I just finished the Hunger Games (the first book) a couple days ago, loved it, and am currently writing my review for it. It really reminded me of the Max Ride series by James Patterson (but neither Peeta or Gale are as smexy as Fang!). =) Anyways, thanks for the reviews and...GO TEAM PEETA! ;)hehehe

  6. Love this book can't wait for the movie!!!

  7. Janelle

I can't wait either!! I hope they don't mess it up! *crosses fingers*

  8. What is the recommended age to read this book?

  9. I believe the book says 12 and up. There's no sex or language in the books, but there is a large amount of violence and death as the books are about children being forced to fight to the death. There are some examples of the violence listed on our other site, if you're interested. The review for Mockinjay will give you the most details since we read the other two books before we started the site.

  10. I was wrong. It says 14 and up. :)

  11. Impressive tale. The hunted become the hunters and a near Romeo and Juliet ending provides enough action, romance and intrigue to keep the reader from putting the book down. The minute differences from the movie make the story more intriguing and the popularity of the movies is understandable. can't wait to read the next two!
