Halloween Picks! Your Favorite Scary Books!

Last week for our Second Hand Saturday giveaway, we asked you what your favorite scary book was.  I thought it would be fun to share what everyone picked.  Stephen King's IT was a huge favorite!  Here are your answers...

April said...

I haven't read many scary books... Which is a little sad. I loved the Body Finder though, which was a little scary? Eh? I'm just easily frightened.

twimom101 said...

I don't read awhole lot of scary books now a days. but in highschool I loved that story of The Monkey's Paw and The Raven

Kailia Sage said...

Would it be weird if I said IT by Stephan King....

Jolene Allcock and Family said...

I think the scariest book that I have read is Pet cemetary and It by Stephen King. Anything by Stephen King really creeps me out. Some of Dean Koontz's too, I love his books, but they don't give me the shivers like Stephen Kings

Savannah Smith said...

I don't really read scary stories (although I wish I did) but there was this one book I read called The Devil's Arithmetic and it was about the Holocaust. It wasn't like "Boo!"-scary, but it definitely terrified me while I was reading it and I cried a lot. Especially the ending...

Misha1989 said...

Being a coward(lol) I don't read many scary stories but reading Salem's lot by Stephen King made me lose my sleep for 3 days!

Teril said...

My worst scary book is the Little Book of Etiquette. Really how does one accomplish all those benign tasks of preforming so properly! My daughter brought home a copy since she wanted to have a 'formal' dinner and she was astonished that we did now own all the proper cutlery needed.
It is pretty scary, especially the proper ladylike way to extract snails for escargot, oh that was filled with horror with that tiny spoon!

Ashley said...

I haven't read many scary books. They are something I avoided when I was younger, and have just barely decided I might like to read. So, even though I didn't find it particularly scary, I'd have to go with The Forest of Hands and Teeth, because zombies are kind of nuts.

The scariest book I've ever read was Needful Things by Stephen King--but it's not something I'd recommend to teens!

Nor is my favourite Horror story, The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

But I think I can recommend Neal Shusterman's YA Horror. I read his Red Rider's Hood, a new take on "Little Red Riding Hood" and werewolves, not knowing it was meant to be scary and was properly chilled. And I've just finished Full Tilt, about an evil amusement park that wants your soul. Great stuff!

Cass (Words on Paper) said...

I don't read too many. But I liked BAD GIRLS DON'T DIE by Katie Alender.

buddyt said...

I would probably have to say one of Steven King's books although I haven't really ever been scared by a book. If forced to choose I would opt for Salem's Lot.

Thanks for the giveaway.

Horowitz Horror by Anthony Horowitz.

Amber Griffiths said...

I think for me it's a cross between 'IT' and 'The Shining' by Stephen King. Because I hate clowns (gahh) and the whole REDRUM thing... oh my gosh.

Steph said...

Mine is Dracula It was a good one though!! This is a great idea!

sweet_heart_52_9 said...

I don't really read scary books because I'm a big chicken and don't like to get scared even though I watch scary movies. haha but it has to be during the day and with the lights on :) I guess the scariest book I read was Pet cemetary by Stephen King

Charis said...

I love Firestarter by Stephen King. Wait...is that horror?

Mrs. DeRaps said...

My favorite scary book right now is Sleepless by Thomas Fahy. I had nightmares for a week!

Sofie Thoft said...

I haven't read a bunch of scary books but gotta say that I've gotten some great ideas from the comments and think I might start reading that genre again! I think the scariest books I have read is probably Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and "Live Girls" by Ray Garton!

carmenpaigee said...

"And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie
a pretty frightening a story.

Amanda said...

I'm not really one for scary books (although books are a lot easier to handle than movies!). But the scariest book I ever read was Scavenger Hunt by Christopher Pike. I was maybe 10 years old when I read it and refused to read another Pike book until well into high school.

elizabeth said...

My favorite scary book is The Ruins by Scott Smith

Lauren M (365 Days of Reading) said...

My favorite scary stories are by Edgar Allan Poe. So dark...so creepy! I have an old collection of his short stories, so I'd say that collection is my favorite scary book!

Shay-la said...

I really don't read books just because they are scary, but some paranormals I read have creepy parts. Like The DeVouring...and let's face it...the Hunger Games were straight up freaky.

Oh, p.s.: I LOVE the halloween banner at the top.

Carol M said...

Books don't really scare me but Pet Sematary by Stephen King bothered me a lot!

Tore said...

I thought Stephen King's book It was scary.

xlacrimax said...

I don't read scary books because scary things make me fear everything just like scary movies and etc. Though I have tried reading S. King's book once - maybe it wasn't the best book of his because I didn't find it interesting at all and didn't finished it. So I don't have a favorite scary book. xlacrimax at gmail dot com

Asenath said...

I'm not a big fan of scary stories--I get waaaay too scared. The YA book Unwind wasn't super scary (it had some tense parts), but the ideas behind the novel were frightening to think about.
I don't read very many scarey stories either. The Shining by Stephen King.

Lucía said...

mmm it would be one from highschool named "El almohadón de plumas" by Horacio Quiroga ^^

I'd say "Amityville Horror: A True Story” by Jay Anson. What were those little red eyes?!!

melannie skoob said...

eeem I don't read a lot of scary books (I get scared extremely easy) so I don't know if this count as scary, but project 17 made me had nightmares D:

Sharli said...

Though I don't read many scary books my favorite is Carrie by Stephen King

Mare/TommyGirl said...

I thought the Historian was rather creepy and freaked me out a bit. The scariest book I ever read was It by Stephen King in high school - girl with fear of clowns should NOT read that.

Badass Bookie said...

I don't read too many scary novels but one series I have read is The Devouring and Soulstice by Simon Holt.Great books but really scary!!!

Aleksandra said...

I haven't read a lot of scary books, but one of my favorite reads this year is The Light by D.J. MacHale, so I'd go with that one :)

Thanks for the giveaway :)

Dovile said...

The scarriest book I've read was Carrie by Stephen King. I don't really like horror genre, but I was curious about King's books, and that was the first one of his that I've read. I actually quite liked his writing style:)

Cialina said...

I don't really read a lot of scary books.... Hmmm, the last ghost book that I read was a long time ago: Haunted by Meg Cabot. I don't know if it would be my favorite book though.

Sheepa Begum said...

I don't really read scary books, but the one book that I did find scary was Stolen by Lucy Christopher. Although it's not a common kidnapping tale, I found the notion of possible Stockholm Syndrome very scary. The book completely messed up my mind.
LOVED IT!

Precious said...

I was young when I read The Vanished by Celia Rees. I wasn't really into reading back then but we had a subject in highschool in which we weren't doing anything for a few weeks. So I borrowed it from my classmate. It was the first time I felt scared because of reading.

sablelexi said...

Hmm...well I'm not sure if qualifies as a scary book, but it had me scared disturbed for weeks: Life as We knew It. For me so much of the ways people reacted to the end of the world seemed completely believable and made me worry how I'd survive.

Nadinax said...

I haven't read many scary books so far, but my favorite is Bag Of Bones by the king of horror, Stephen King. That man is a genius, although I was reluctant to read this book at first, at the end not only I was scared but I was also in love. Great read.

Scoot said...

I am not a huge fan of scary books, I tend to avoid them. Most books by Stephen King would fit the bill on the scary front. But I am too much of a wimp to actually read any of them! Thanks!

Jessi E. (The Elliott Review) said...

Right now I don't usually choose to read books that are straight scary, however there are certain parts of just random books that end up being scary to me. When I was younger I read Christopher Pike and R. L. Stine like they were going out of style!

Judit said...

I have to admit, for all I remember I read only one scary book. It was only recently and I LOVED it. The book's name was Nevermore by Kelly Creagh and it totally surprised me. I can't wait for the sequel!

Reading Lassie said...

When I'm reading, I imagine all the details that the book describes, and it will live in my mind for so long. That's the reason why I don't read scary books. I'm a coward. lol.

Lis said...

I'm not SO into scary books, maybe 'cause I'm just easily frightened :S But, Florence and Giles by John Harding made me feel scared for a while, I have to admit it :x

Edna said...

I don't really read scary books. There have been creepy villains in some of my adult romantic suspense books (Linda Howard and this one by Karen Rose) though.

Another Book Junkie said...

I haven't ever had a book scare me, but I've read a few that I think were intended to be scary. I loved Feed, by Mira Grant.

Emilie said...

I can't really think of a favorite scary book. It's not that I don't read them but I don't get scared that easy. Though I remember when I was little the Goosebump books used to really scare me.

Lizzie said...

Definitely The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong. That book FREAKED me out! Actually, the whole series did. Chloe's powers are definitely not something I'd want to have. ;)

Llehn said...

The Shining - Stephen King!

Jasmine1485 said...

my favourite scary book is 'The Stand' by Stephen King. It was the first book I read that really freaked me out :)

Louisse said...

The scariest book I've read is Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott. I know it isn't a horror story or anything but the content is scary in a it-could-really-happen kind of way. It's a really wonderful book but you know it shows the dangers of the world. Elizabeth Scott is an amazing writer!!! I so can't wait to read Grace! XD
Thanks so much for adding Grace there! :)
I am so stoked for this week's Secondhand Saturday Giveaway! :D

Guta Bauer said...

OMG It's IT by Stephan King. I had to stop several times 'cause i was really scared AHAHAHAHA

Anne Royce said...

I guess the scariest book I've read so far is The Body Finder. I don't really read scary books but it's the closest to scary :)

tam. said...

Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead!

melk_va said...

I'd have to say "Misery" by Stephen King, that book scared the hell out of me. Man, Stephen's a genius when it comes to writing scary books *shivers*

pepsivanilla said...

I don't read many scary books, but I found The Body Finder by Kimberley Derting to be pretty creepy, both because of the dead bodies thing and the stalkerish alternating chapters.

ferretvamp14 said...

When I was in middle school I read the R.L. Stine Fear Street books (not Goosebumps), and I remember them being pretty scary. As far as recently, the Harper Connelly series by Charlaine Harris scares me at times. It's the ghost and suspense kind of fear, not really scared out of my wits. I did have to put Stephen King's Pet Sematary down.

Thays said...

i don't like too much scary books, so my favorite is from Sidney Sheldon "Are you afraid of the dark?"
and yeah, is not a really scary book, but is the more close, i think.

Rachellev said...

Bad Girls Don't Die! The scariest book on my radar so far.

Cicely said...

I don't real a lot of horror, but Edgar Allen Poe's work is pretty scary.

Christine said...

The scariest book I've ever read is It by Stephen King. But my favorite one is Carrie.

Same author, two different reactions.

eeeschen said...

Back in High School I tried to read everything King had ever written. I made it to, up to the most recently released (Bag of Bones). He's got a bunch of horror, but my favorite has been "The Stand." I've read it 4 or 5 times now.

Cem said...

I'm not sure it's strictly scary, because I don't often get scared reading, but it is possible to completely freak me out psycohlogically with a high creep factor. My 'favourite' read that's done that is Neal Shusterman's Unwind. I shudder just thinking about it, but it was so freaking good!

Orchid said...

I love scary books, but I have yet to read one that actually scared me. I wasn't even scared in the slightest by the Stephen king books I have read.
Although my favorite scary book is The Devouring by Simon Holt. ^_^

Stephen King scares the hell out of me. I can`t name a book because they are all scary.

Ashlie Swainston said...

I haven't read very many scary books, but I've read every Kay Scarpetta book ever written by Patricia Cornwell, and some of her stuff is super intense. It's technically thriller/murder mystery, but sometimes I've wanted to sleep with the lights on after reading one of them. The first of that series is Postmortem, and its uh-maz-ing and suspenseful. This is a great idea, thanks for the inspiration!

ylime1981 said...

Yesterday's Child by Barbara Wood. It's not a terrifying book, but it does give me the hebbe-jeebies (is there a correct way to spell that????) but I love to read it!

Anaiz said...

My favorite scary book would have to be The 13 Best Horror Stories of All Time, it's a collection of short stories.

GREYZ said...

This is easy. :) The Shining,by Stephen King.

Britta said...

I don't really read scary books... But I loved The Body Finder, The Forest of Hands and Teeth, and The Dead Tossed Waves- Do those count? Starting The Forest of Hands and Teeth at midnight did not give me the easiest time falling asleep. I thought it was kind of scary... anyone else? Or am I just a book baby? (That sounds sort of cool.. book baby... new complement!)
