From Lisi Harrison, the New York Times bestselling author of The Clique and Alphas, comes a new series with a fresh twist on high school, romance, and the "horrors" of trying to fit in.
The monster community has kept a low profile at the local high school, but when two new girls enroll, the town will never be the same. Created just fifteen days ago, Frankie Stein is psyched to trade her father's formaldehyde-smelling basement lab for parties and prom.
But with a student body totally freaked out by rumors of monsters stalking the halls, Frankie learns that high school can be rough for a chic freak like her. She thinks she finds a friend in fellow new student Melody Carver-but can a "normie" be trusted with her big secret?

My Thoughts...
Monster High is probably the most shallow, and pointless book I have ever read.
I have never read a book where I can practically feel myself losing IQ points.
I always stayed away from the Clique books, because I could just look at the cover and feel like I would waste my time reading them.
But now I'm thinking maybe the soup I ate for lunch messed with my mind a little bit, because I actually read this book.
I've read a lot of other reviews on Monster High, because I was curious on what other people thought of it.
Well, it looks like I'm pretty much the only person on this planet that didn't absolutely loved this book.
Maybe I'm too picky?
No, I just like books that make my brain tick a little.
I like when a book makes me feel satisfied after reading it.
A good book to me is when I feel as if the book had eaten me whole.
I can't go through life normally because all I'm thinking about it that book.
Monster High didn't have that effect on me at all.
Instead, it made me feel like somebody scooped my brains out.
That's how shallow and self obsessed it was.
Every single girl in Monster High was completely consumed with clothes and who was dating the most popular boy.
Thats not exaclty my cup of tea.
Now, I know the book is not supposed to be realistic because there are monsters through out the whole story line. But really? It got very annoying. (Plus the fact that the main character Frankie was obsessed with Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga just added a bonus on the annoying level.)
This story switch's between main characters, Melody and Frankie.
Honestly, when it started to explain Melody, I thought, that maybe just maybe this book had a little bit of potential. Because, Melody was different. She found her older sister obnoxious and annoying, which I completely agreed. I think maybe half of the reason I was nauseated by this book was because Melody's sister named her breasts after her favorite fashion designers. The other half was probably because I was in bed, sick. Anyway, instead of Melody being the highlight in this book, she ruined any chance I was going to give this book. She ended up being just as shallow as everyone else in Monster High.
All she cared about was fitting in with the popular girls because she feels like a loner.
I mean, can't we maybe put just a little bit more substance to this story?
I have talked to a lot of girls who have told me that The Clique series is great, well Monster High didn't leave a very good impression at all. So you won't find me reading The Clique series, anytime soon.
Now I know, I'm really shredding this book apart.
But it's not everyday I come across a book that makes me want to gag because of the lack of substance.  so writing this review is leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.
Sorry, if you expected to read a review about a new delightful book that would just enlighten your day, and instead got this negative review on a book, that you now probably won't read because of what I have said.
But this is only my opinion, and your opinion, may or may not be different. I mean you might LOVE it.
So please, if you disagree with how I have critiqued Monster High comment and tell me what you loved about it.

  1. I was thinking about reading this book a couple months ago...and then I learned that the book was created around a doll collection that just recently came out. So marketing-wise, it's pretty shallow in that aspect as well...although I think I'm still going to read it just to see how I'd like it.

  2. I'm glad you wrote this. I was in Target about six months ago and spotted the Barbie-like dolls from this book. I called over my husband and we were trying to figure out what the hell they were--I got the vampire and the Frankenstein, for example, but what about the sea monster? I think Monster High follows in the hallowed footsteps of Strawberry Shortcake, Transformers, and every other book/show made only to sell toys.

  3. I am very pleased to read this book, this is very interesting book, i like it so much. Thanks.

  4. I have not read the book and I don't plan to. My friends all read the Clique, so I attempted to. I didn't get much further than the 3rd page. I'm sure there is something in them that makes so many people read - and that's good, congratulations Ms. Harrison. But I couldn't get past the pronunciations like Cah-laire. Just the though of it made me what to break stuff.

So long story short, I'm not surprised that you feel this way. i would probably feel the same way.

  5. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this. I considered picking this up before, but didn't because of lack of funds.

  6. Oh it's so refreshing to read a review where honestly comes before being politically correct! This made me laugh so SO much. You are like a breath of fresh air. Everyone has different opinions on books, even great works of art of disliked by some, but thats the beauty of this world we live in - you're allowed to have a different opinion.
    Thanks for the giggles.

  7. I was at walmart this past sunday with my mom and this book was over there so I picked it up and read the jacket copy and I would say it didn't really catched my eye, :|

(although I think the name Frankie Stein is pretty funny) but I learned my lesson with GhostGirl: usually, the YAbooks that reach my country are not worth reading :|

  8. This book is good for the people that like the creative books so maybe that just isnt your type of book. i happen to like the book. i cant wait for the second one!

  9. the review was not right and you can bite my big toe if you dont like it. this book leaves you with the 'taste of honey not viniger'(line in book). you dont have a lick of scence to write that review. its easy to hide behind the internet but i dare you to say that to lisa harrisons face!

  10. I LOVE MONSTER HIGH, THIS BOOK, THE SECOND ONE AND I`M ABOUT TO READ THE THIRD ONE!!!!!! This book is about love and loss, fitting in and relates to most readers. It includes characters with personality and twists. This book stands out and everyone should read it. This is not a stupid Clique book, this is a book about friendship. This is about how everyone`s equal. Lisi Harrison is a great author. Also, why do you think they have 3 books, people must like them. This book shows you a different perspective on life. I WISH THIS BOOK COULD BE LONGER! You said a book you always think about and are thrilled about and feel engaged by is a great book. I thought a lot about this book and was totally thrilled and engaged! I don`t care what you think, this IS an amazing book.

  11. Your cynical review of this novel is a little overwhelming. Have you even tried reading into the book and realizing what exactly it was about? Well, I guess you wouldn't because you've already decided how you feel on the book. If you are going to review something, I'd suggest you take the time to do it properly by discussing the pros and cons of the book and then explaining why it wasn't your cup of tea rather than spewing your negative comments about it in one giant paragraph of grammatical shit. Oh, and word to the wise, EVERYONE is shallow in one aspect or another. All human beings are flawed that way, so please get off of your high horse because you are no better than anyone else.
    Have a great day.

    1. First of all, you need to chill out. People have different opinions. She said that just because she didn't like it, it doesn't mean you won't. In fact, one of our tween reviewers reviewed it and loved it. You can find her review here Monster High

    2. Dear Anonymous,

"it's easy to hide behind the internet" - At least Abigaile has a name and face!

      Case closed.

    3. AMY! I almost peed myself laughing. Awesome comeback (even though one wasn't even needed. That comment seems ridiculous by itself).

  12. Abigale, you just go right on letting your brain desire a workout when you read a book! Your opinion is just as valid as any of the "anonymouses" who have posted (more so than some!). These kinds of attacks have no place and are just ridiculous.

Thank you for writing what you felt and thought!

  13. Sounds like something that would have sent me ranting, and screaming. Honest reviews are honest reviews and sometimes you have to call a spade, a spade. Congrats, Abbe, you've been inducted into "the club." We've all gotten blasted for a review, or two.

  14. To be honest, I didn't like it that much. The plot seemed so boring, I couldn't even finish it.

  15. I read the first sentence, "Frank opened her eyes to a bright light..." Blah blah blah.... The plot was so boring. All of my friends were reading it, so I bought it at walmart. And after reading that first sentence, I decided to put on my shelf and never read agian. That book was boring!

  16. Over the past few weeks, I considered reading this book. Many people I know gave it positive enough reviews. Still, I was skeptical, so I started researching. (I knew it was a bad sign when the first few pages that popped up when I typed in 'Monster High', were about the mini series tv show, rather than the book.) I watched the mini series, and actually found myself to enjoy it a bit. Sure it was mindless and gossipy, but I found them fun to watch after a long day. Then, I looked for reviews over the books. Oh. My. God. This was quite possibly the hardest research task ever. The only positive reviews I could find on it were created by 8 year olds. The other reviews I found were similar to this, but much more sugar coated. I like the fact that you started out with "I didn't like this book very much, here's is why" rather than "Oh blah blah blah is a wonderful writer that possibly needs work on plot development." Anyway, that was an extremely long ramble (sorry.), but thank you for writing this review!

  17. Well, I personally LOVE this book. It's very close to the real life in some points. I simply love the character of Melody and I know exactly how some characters feel. I'm very different of the other people, but I have to hide it because of mockery. Also, I love the dolls and I'm planning to be a collector.

  18. Thanks for writing this. It is good to know that the book is shallow.
