Interview with Amy Holder, Author of The Lipstick Laws

Today we have an interview with Amy Holder, author of The Lipstick Laws, as part of a Teen Book Scene blog tour.

Hi Amy!  Thanks for chatting with us!  Before we start, can you describe your book for us in five words.

Fun, girly, light-hearted, relatable, quirky
Ok, well I have a girly question for you then! What's your favorite kind of lipstick?

I’m actually more of a lip gloss girl, but I really like the liquid lipstick from e.l.f. Cosmetics because it’s a great blend between lipstick and lip gloss. The Caramel Candy color is my favorite!
Caramel Candy? I'll have to try that....though I may not be able to stop licking my lips! We were wondering, as a teenager, were you more like April or Britney?

I was definitely more like April. I was unsure of myself at times, slightly boy-crazy, loved the mall and my phone, had a quirky sense of humor (and still do), had naturally curly hair (and still do)… and I also dealt with some of the same feelings that April does with regards to wanting to be accepted and fit in. I think those are pretty common feelings for teens, regardless of where you fit in on the social hierarchy totem pole.
Well, you've obviously overcome a lot of those insecurities to become such a well-known writer, but if you weren't a writer, what would you be?

I have a psychology degree and have worked a lot in the social service and education fields, so I’d probably be doing something along that line of work. I was taking graduate classes to be a school counselor before getting published… but writing is definitely my dream job!
As a non-practicing psychology major, what advice can you give to teen girls that are dealing with their own "Britney"?

My advice would be to stay true to yourself and what’s important to you! Never let anyone try to change who you are, or pressure you to do things you’re not comfortable with. If you’re being bullied, know that it doesn’t last forever… and Karma has a knack for straightening things out in the end.
The Lipstick Laws
Thanks so much, Amy for chatting with us! We're really excited to get a hold of The Lipsick Laws when it comes out.

At Penford High School, Britney Taylor is the queen bee. She dates whomever she likes, rules over her inner circle of friends like Genghis Khan, and can ruin anyone's life with a snap of perfectly manicured fingers. Just ask the unfortunate few who have crossed her.

For April Bowers, Britney is also the answer to her prayers. April is so unpopular, kids don't even know she exists. But one lunch spent at Britney's table, and April is basking in the glow of popularity.

But Britney's friendship comes with a high price tag. How much is April willing to pay?
The Lipstick Laws releases April, 4, 2011!
