You can't always run from danger...

Haunted by the loss of his mother and sister, Han Alister journeys south to begin his schooling at Mystwerk House in Oden’s Ford. But leaving the Fells doesn’t mean danger isn’t far behind. Han is hunted every step of the way by the Bayars, a powerful wizarding family set on reclaiming the amulet Han stole from them. And Mystwerk House has dangers of its own. There, Han meets Crow, a mysterious wizard who agrees to tutor Han in the darker parts of sorcery—but the bargain they make is one Han may regret.

Meanwhile, Princess Raisa ana’Marianna runs from a forced marriage in the Fells, accompanied by her friend Amon and his triple of cadets. Now, the safest place for Raisa is Wein House, the military academy at Oden's Ford. If Raisa can pass as a regular student, Wein House will offer both sanctuary and the education Raisa needs to succeed as the next Gray Wolf queen.

The Exiled Queen is an epic tale of uncertain friendships, cut-throat politics, and the irresistible power of attraction.

Awhile ago, a good Twitter friend told me that since I love Harry Potter, Graceling, Fire, Brightly Woven, Poison Study, and Lord of the Rings, that I should read The Demon King.  I downloaded the free sample onto my Kindle and read it, and I had a hard time really getting into it because there were a lot of details and descriptions, so I never bought the book.  Later she asked me about it, and I told her I couldn't get into the beginning, and she said to just try again, that it was so good.  So, I decided to try the audiobook instead.  I can not tell you how glad I am that she forced me into this.  I adore this series!!

The Audio

The audiobook was fantastic!  I'm usually more of a "guy reader" (especially guy-with-a-British-accent reader) kind of girl, but the woman who reads The Demon King and The Exiled Queen was brilliant!  Usually I can't get into a girl reading a guy part, but she does such a good job reading these books that I was completely lost in these stories.  I downloaded them to my ipod and listened to them at every given opportunity.  I don't think I've been so lost in a story since I listened to Harry Potter.  All of her characters have different and distinct voices which were completely believable.  I was so impressed!  This is one of my favorite books on CD that I've ever listened to.  Listen to a sample here.

The Exiled Queen:

I was so excited to continue this story and see what happened to Han and Raisa.   Cinda William Chima does such an amazing job bringing this Epic tale to life.  I felt like I spent the whole book anticipating the time that Han and Raisa would meet again, but somehow still enjoyed every minute until that moment happened.  The character development was so phenomenal that I felt like I knew Han and Raisa, and was so completely invested in their lives and their plight.

Magic, danger, betrayal, fighting, war, love and romance, this book had all the things I love most in a story.  I love when a writer is able to show all sides of a story, and go in all different directions with the different characters, then somehow bring it all back together, weaving it into one tale, where the smallest action from one character can change the course of another character's life.

I loved this book even more than the first one.  I think a lot of that has to do with Han.  I feel like he really grew up in this book, and became an adult.  I know he's only 16 or 17, but his life experiences and tragedies have made him into a very smart and capable leader.  I loved reading from his point of view.  I also loved Raisa in this book.  She was so kick-butt!!  It was great to see her taking things into her own hands, learning to fight, and learning how to be a better, more informed ruler.

My favorite parts, though, were when Han and Raisa finally meet again, though Han knows her as Rebekah.  I love how their stories intertwine, and I'm so incredibly anxious to find out what's going to happen next, especially since this one ended in a big fat cliffhanger!!  I love this story so much that I think I'm going to start listening to The Demon King then The Exiled Queen all over again until I can get the next book in the series!

The Gray Wolf Throne is the third book, and it is set to release August 30.  Recorded Books will also be releasing it on audio sometime around October, and I can not wait!  I can't recommend these books, and these audiobooks enough.  If you are a fan of epic fantasy, you will love this series!

  1. I loved The Demon King and The Exiled Queen but didn't listen to the audio book. Now I'm kind of curious about the audiobook. I also loved the moments when Han and Raisa's story entwines! It doesn't feel overwhelming and it just comes together so nicely!

Anxiously waiting for The Gray Wolf Throne.

  2. Vy, I can't recommend the audiobooks enough! You get SO immersed in the story!! It's fantastic! Especially The Exiled Queen!!

  3. I'm such a nice annoying friend!!!! huahuahuahuahuahua
I can't wait to meet Cinda on BEA! And guess what, I'll be meeting you too! HA! =P

Aren't the covers of this series THE MOST BEAUTIFUL EVER? =)

  4. I won The Exiled Queen from a blog giveaway, and absolutely love it!! Haven't read the Demon King yet (I know, I know, I need to). It was one of those books that you just don't want to end...

  5. I've been somewhat eager to read this series since I saw someone else's review on The Demon King. Just curius... how long into the actual book (ch./pgs.) did it take you be hooked?

  6. Joanna, I liked the very beginning, then it got into a lot of description and I kind of drifted off, then it picked back up. I just have a hard time staying focused when there's a lot of detail. There were times throughout the books where this was the case. That's why the audiobook was good for me because I could let my mind wander during the descriptions, haha. But, it was mostly really great for me, I don't want you to think it was a lot of boring moments, there was just some history that was slower for me.

  7. Oh my goodness, this is one of my most favorite series... EVER! I can not wait to read The Gray Wolf Throne. Thank goodness I got it from NetGalley! Now it looks like I will need to invest in the audiobooks, as well!

  8. I absolutely love this series and I love the audiobook versions. I have listened to both books Demon King and Exiled queen on audio and I hope to continue listening to this series on audio. They are exceptionally well done!

  9. These are on my TBR list. I'm more of a guy audiobook reader person too.
