In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Well, do I really need to say anything at all?  You've all heard it, you've seen the hype, you've heard the comparisons, you know what I'm about to say....This book was awesome!  It has easily jumped into my top 5 favorite Dystopians.

I feel like going on and on about this book will be redundant because, really, this book is everywhere right now, and you probably know as much as you can possibly know about it without having read it already, so....I will just say that I really loved it!  If you want to skip the rest and just click BUY NOW, you are completely welcome to do so!  :D

One of the most exciting things for me in this story, were the x-treme type activities that the Dauntless took part in.  I mean there were some really brutal parts that were tough to stomach, but when they were just out playing "capture the flag," or jumping off buildings, or climbing very tall structures etc.  I loved it!  I'm SO ready to be Dauntless.....well, if it wasn't for the getting-the-crap-kicked-out-of-me part, that is.

I loved Tris and her bravery.  She reminded me a lot of Katniss in that she was strong, determined, tough, and smart, but still at times naive, suspicious, and distrusting.  They both have a very hard time seeing that people are trying to help them, looking out for them (and maybe falling in love with them).  The journey that Tris takes in this book is just fantastic to read.  I love how I was so frustrated with her at the beginning, then got to watch her as she started to "get it."

I love, love, love Four!!!  I just want to eat him up!!!  He was the perfect mentor for Tris.  He pushed her when she needed pushing, and showed compassion when she needed compassion.  What is it about tough guys that show a hint of vulnerability?  LOVE!! I also love that he's protective without being controlling.  That's a hard line to walk, but he looks mighty fine walkin' it!

It's crazy to me that I can read a book like this, that has so many complexities, but the one thing I just couldn't get enough of was the romance.  Geeze I'm such a romance-aholic!!  I ate up every minute of romantic tension between these characters.  Every touch, every will they/won't they moment was like blissful torture!

(*Maybe a spoiler?  I'll leave out names to protect the "innocent")
And can I give a quick shout out to the virgin 18-year-old guy in this book??  I can't tell you how awesome it was to read about a smart, hot, amazing guy who also cared about what sex means.  Kudos to you!!  It was nice to see that yeah, there are guys out there who might be intimidated by sex, and aren't just out there sleeping around with everyone, and that didn't make him any less swoon-worthy.  In fact....it made me love him even more!
(*End of maybe spoiler)

The story-building was fascinating in Divergent.  Veronica Roth does an awesome job setting up this insane society where everyone is divided into factions based on their beliefs/strengths.  I don't know that this world was totally believable, but I was completely lost in it, nonetheless!  It certainly made me think about the world, and how easily we just go along in our lives in our own little "factions."  I mean, we don't have names like Amity, Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, or Candor.  Instead we have names like Republican, Democrat, Christian, Atheist, Rich, Poor, or even American, European.  How often do we step out of our factions?  How often to we question why we do what we do?  How many of us are DIVERGENT?  Something to think about, for sure!

Politics, fighting, family, love, war, control, identity, brutality, compassion, fear, fearlessness, despair, longing, hope, and romance....ahhh....romance, this book has it all!  Fans of The Hunger Games, yes, you will like this.  Some say you'll like it better!

  12. Well, I just read Anna, so I don't want to read this one; two back-to-back to-die-for novels kills the ability to save them for a rainy day, but I can't wait to enter Tris's world.

I am Candor, which is what I would say when I engaged in conversations with other bloggers, but now it's official.

. Sexual tension between characters is always fun to read

. I think the "virgin" is a great role model for young people

. I like your analogy of the factions in DIVERGENT to the groups we are inadvertently a member of in real life.

  81. Wow. Great review. I love books where the lead character is a female (might have something to do with being an only child, an only niece and an only granddaughter...or something.) but I'm usually worried that the character won't live up to what I hope she is. But Tris and the book sound awesome, and I'm gonna start hunting (I mean searching up) this book.

  91. OMG Andye why didn't you just BEAT me on the head with this book?! Where have I been? Why have I taken so long to read this book?!!!

    (Spoilers!)
You were right, I LOVED DIVERGENT! This book is up there for me with THG.
I was thinking about the "factions" myself when I read this book, we might not be separated as they are but there are always boxes to tick in the many forms we fill in, there are always things the define us and separate us from others. I thought Roth was just a genius to put this in a book and then add to it the danger of being Divergent. How many people out there get treated harshly for being "different" than what is accepted? How many people feel like they don't "fit in" with a certain crowd? When the truth is that no one is made a certain way, each one of us is different and probably 90% of us would be divergent. You can't put people in jars and label them because no one definition lasts forever.
I loved the concept and if that wasn't enough we were given a heroine like Tris. She was Dauntless even before she chose her faction! I loved how she never gave up on them, she made her bed and she lay on it. She wouldn't back down and she wouldn't desert them. She fitted in perfectly :)
And Four... *sigh* He is special. What's not to love? His relationship with Tris is great! Like you said he's caring when he needs to be and tough with her when it's needed.
A round of applause for the 18 year old virgin!!! *claps like a loony*

  92. Oh I forgot to say I LOVE TRIS' MUM! She might have played a small role but she was still amazing.
