Interview with Katie Kacvinsky, Author of Awaken

As part of the Cornucopia of Dystopia event, we have an interview with the amazingly talented at writing awesome kissing scenes....Katie Kacvinsky.  If you'd like to read my review of Awaken, you can check it out here.

• Describe your book to us in five words.
Dystopian romance, awesomely, awesomely, awesome.

• What made you decide to write a dystopian novel?
I never meant to! It’s one of those books that wrote itself. I started journaling about trees one day, and that journal entry turned in Maddie’s voice, which turned into her story.

• What sets your book apart from the other dystopians that are out there right now?
My book challenges the digital/social networking world that everyone is so caught up in. I haven’t read a book yet that has that story line. And let’s face it, Awaken is a romance. There are dystopian themes and messages mixed in, but it is heavy on the love story.

Awaken• I really love the cover! Did you get any say in how it looked?
I love it too, and no, I didn’t give any input on the design. That cover is the brilliant work of Carol Chu and the design department at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

• How much did your own life experiences effect your writing?
Awaken is 99% of my imagination. I definitely do write from my own experiences sometimes, but when I started writing Awaken it just poured out of me. My characters wrote it for me. I felt like I was just translating their thoughts.

• Are you working on anything now? Can you tell us about it?
I am currently working on another book for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. It’s called First Comes Love and it’s YA. This book is very different from Awaken. When I finished writing Awaken, I wanted to take a break and work on something light. I gave myself the creative challenge to write a love story from the male point of view. What started out as a fun writing project became a book. The story actually flips narratives between the girl and guy. I think it’s absolutely wonderful and I can’t wait for it to be in print.
YAY!  I love it when the narrative flips from the girl to the guy!!!  LOVE!  I can't wait to read it!!

Thanks so much for chatting with us!!  I really enjoyed AWAKENED!!

  1. Nice interview. Awaken sounds good. I've only recently started reading YA and dystopian novels. I can't believe how much I enjoy them. Looks like I'll have to get Awaken as soon as I get my income tax check.
