A Fun Interview with Veronica Roth, Author of Divergent

As you probably know by now, Divergent was one of my favorite books, and it is also our Reading Clean Spotlight pick this month.  So, I was REALLY excited to do this interview with Veronica Roth.  But not just any interview would do, I had to make this one IS Veronica Roth after all.  I think we can all expect that one day she will be a star, up there with Suzanne Collins and the like.  So, thanks so much, Veronica for playing along and answering our strange questions!

Ok, first off I'd like to know, if this book were real, what character would you most like to go on a date with, and where would you go? (Can be a platonic date :)
I would go on a platonic date with Four (yes: actually platonic). I would love to have a serious conversation with him. I feel like he would be a good person to do that with— he’s thoughtful and he’s had an interesting life. As for where we would go…the Dauntless compound! Only because I really, really want to see it.
Uh, yeah...I think I'd be going on a date with Four also, though I'm not sure if it would be platonic....(kidding, hubby!!)
Ok, strap on your thinking cap.  If a book thief broke into your house and stole one book, which book would you hope he took so that when he read it, he would decide to return it, apologize, and change his ways?
That is a complicated question. I feel like the only book I have that could possibly have that effect would be the Bible (particularly if he opened straight to the Ten Commandments and read “thou shalt not steal.” Ha). And I would be pretty impressed with him for reading the whole thing, as I haven’t quite managed to do that myself. And I would probably let him keep it.
Ok, that was a good answer!  How about this one:  If someone said, "Your book changed my life!" what part would you think she was referring to?
First of all, if someone said that, I would be amazed and possibly giddy. And I would probably think they were referring to the end, when Tris makes an important but dangerous decision that I won’t describe here because it would spoil everything.
We hear that Summit picked up movie rights for Divergent.  If you could play a character in the movie adaptation of your book (whether you looked like him/her or not), which would be the most fun, which would be the hardest, and which would be the most like you?
The most fun: Peter. I’ve always thought that playing villains must be an incredibly good time, because you get to say and do things that you would never dream of doing in real life. The hardest: Tris! Playing her would require an incredible range, emotionally and physically. And the most like me? Well, I’ve begun to realize that I am a lot like Tris—which was not intentional! She’s far braver than I am, and not quite as compassionate, but other than that, we have a lot in common. I’m way too tall for that part, though.
What is the question you wish I had asked, and how would you answer it?
Hmm. I guess I wish you had asked, “what’s your favorite faction?” Because then I would get to tell you that my favorite faction doesn’t get a lot of love—it’s Abnegation. It’s not what I would choose, but I think the way they live is fascinating, and they, though not without their flaws, generally live beautiful, good lives.
I agree with you about Abnegation.  I don't think I would pick that one, or rather, I don't think they would have me, but it is certainly the one I admire most, and the one I wish I could be like.

Thanks so much, Veronica for answering our questions!!

OK PEOPLE!!  Have you bought this book yet??  What can I do to convince you that you need to buy it?  If you want to read about how much I loved it, go check out my review here.  If you want to enter to win the book, you can do that here.  But, really....I have already read it, I have an Advanced Reader Copy, and I STILL went out and bought it.  It's that good.  So, just go buy it now!!

  1. Lovely interview!! I really liked the questions that you asked.
I should get this book soon!!!

  2. I love, love, love this book and am following the cookie crumb trails from blog to blog to learn more! The more I think about it the more I think Four is one of my favorite male characters from a book in recent memory.

Thanks for asking some good questions and I'm so glad DIVERGENT is getting so much love! :)

  3. Lovely interview. loved her answer on if a thief broke into her house. Well done!

  4. It's already on my TBR! :)

  5. Loved her answer about The Bible.

Great questions, we are such a team, Andye. I ask the hard-hitting journalism-like stuff that most likely intimidates both the reader and the author and you come up with the most fun thoughts I love hearing the answer to.

When I sell my book you get to interview me.
