Read my review of: Raised by Wolves
There can only be one alpha.
Bryn is finally settling into her position as alpha of the Cedar Ridge Pack—or at least, her own version of what it means to be alpha when you’re a human leading a band of werewolves. Then she finds a teenage boy bleeding on her front porch. Before collapsing, he tells her his name is Lucas, he’s a Were, and Bryn’s protection is his only hope.
But Lucas isn't part of Bryn’s pack, and she has no right to claim another alpha’s Were. With threats—old and new—looming, and danger closing in from all sides, Bryn will have to accept what her guardian Callum knew all along. To be alpha, she will have to give in to her own animal instincts and become less human. And, she’s going to have to do it alone.
Bryn faces both the costs, and the rewards, of love and loyalty, in this thrilling sequel to Raised by Wolves.
I'm gonna start with the negative and end on a positive note.
~ I needed more! Jenn Barnes is a very good writer and storyteller, however I felt the book was a little slower than I would have liked. I was anticipating the werewolf fights and the romance. There were so many great opportunities to throw in a little kiss here and there between Bryn and Chase. And as for the action/adventure I've come to love and expect in a werewolf book, again, so many opportunities to kick-it-up-a-notch!
~ It was all worth it to read the end! The story really came alive at the end. The epic dramatic final scene lasted long enough to be very satisfying. Bryn was total kick butt! I loved how Devon, Chase and Lake were so faithful and protective of their Alpha. The sacrifice everyone made for each other was endearing and brought a tear to my eye. Yes, tear. I enjoyed the parts where the pack had to go to school and just be normal high schoolers.
Devon was so funny and cute, he was definitely my favorite character. Big as a linebacker and cute as a Calvin Klein model. He knew how to tell a joke and he would cut up, all while keeping his watchful eye on Bryn the whole time. Chase was sorta a dud for me in this book, but on a positive note, he loved Bryn very much and you could tell it from Barnes writing!
I did very much enjoy the fact that Barnes added some new very interesting characters to the plot! It was exciting to read about their special powers.
In the end... I hope there is another book, because there are some things I would like to see happen with this series. I'm not completely satisfied with the way the story ended, it left me hanging just a tad. But then that's what the author wants right? ...Always leave them wanting more!
Of course, if you have read Raised by Wolves you will want to read Trial by Fire. It's not perfect but it is well worth the read. And if you haven't started this series, it's a great werewolf story!
