Elizabeth Valchar-pretty, popular, and perfect-wakes up the morning after her eighteenth birthday party on her family's yacht, where she'd been celebrating with her six closest friends. A persistent thumping noise has roused her. When she goes to investigate, what she finds will change everything she thought she knew about her life, her friends, and everything in between. As Liz begins to unravel the circumstances surrounding her birthday night, she will find that no one around her, least of all Liz herself, was perfect-or innocent. Critically acclaimed author Jessica Warman brings readers along on a roller-coaster ride of a mystery, one that is also a heartbreaking character study, a touching romance, and ultimately a hopeful tale of redemption, love, and letting go.
I wasn't sure about this book at first, this is not a book I would normally read. For me, this book had it's ups and downs. I like Elizabeth's character after she dies. Her character before she died was awful. I'm not saying it was written awful, Jessica Warman did a fantastic job writing this book. The characters were set up nicely. I'm just saying that Warman did such a great job making all the popular high school students so stuck up, bratty, and hateful against anyone who wasn't rich or pretty. I know it's fiction and just a book but, I have such a hard time reading about characters who are so shallow and have such a sense of entitlement. It makes me nauseous, it's a real turn off for me. Now I have said all that to say this... I enjoyed this book.
I had no idea what I was getting into when I started reading Between. It deals heavily with eating disorders, mostly anorexia. It really hit me in a weird way, because I've dealt with food, getting fat and obsessing over how much I've weighed all my life. It was hard to read some of the things the girls would go through, in this book, because I have felt the same way many times. Between dealt with many hard topics other than eating disorders, like drunk driving and killing a pedestrian (hit and run), getting laid off and having to sell your home, bullying high school students because of what they looked like, marital affairs, teen sex, teens doing/selling drugs and much more. This book was good, well written but, sometimes a downer. If you like Contemporary, you will most likely enjoy Between.
