Second Hand Saturday 11/5/2011

Welcome to Second Hand Saturday!
In an attempt to clear our bookshelves, and pass on great used books to our stalkers followers, Amy, Kit, Abigaile, Austin and I have decided to hold weekly giveaways of some of the books on our bookshelves! Every Saturday, we will post the books available, and the following Saturday, we will announce the winner and our next challenge. The winner will get to choose a book from the list and we will ship it to that lucky person! Each week we will have a different challenge to complete.

This Week's Challange

For this week's challenge, tell us who you think was a worthless character in a book you've read.  Someone who added nothing to the story, and should have just been left out.  If you can't think of anyone, just tell us which character you love to hate.

This Week's Winner Is

And the winner is...

  1. The twins (yep, both of them) in "Bumped" ... ugh, they annoyed me!!

  2. There are plenty of moments certain characters have that I wish would be different, but as for characters themselves? The only one I think of recently was in Witch Eyes by Scott Tracey. The guy Braden meets on the bus. Can't remember his name. What was his contribution to the story except anger and confusion? He can go, for all I care.

  3. I can't think of a specific example, but a lot of times the side kick needs to either go away or be more involved. If they just hover in the background doing nothing but being there - what's the point?

  4. I don't remember her name, but it was in the book series Gifted, by Marylin Kaye. The friend of Amanda. Boring character. The others were cool.

  5. I have all 3 books and they are not bad books but a lot of times I want to smack Nora from the Hush Hush books, she's whiney and that bugs me.

  6. There's this one character in Divergent, I think his name is Robert. Other than being the Protagonist's "friend" for like a chapter or two at the beginning of the book he's sort of useless to the story. I mean even though he's the way that some other kids she "trains" with find out what her name is short for... even that leads to nothing. If he were taken out I doubt the book would change very much. He might be getting a big part in the next book in the series (I'm guessing since it's unreleased) but if he doesn't *shakes head* what's his use? Oh, like, none.

  7. Bella Swan!! GOD, that girl annoys the crap out of me! I think if anyone with more brains had been telling the story, I might've even liked Twilight (probably not...)!!!!

  8. Mary D [M.A.D.]

That's an easy one ... after the first book Twilight, Edward could have been left out of the rest of the series as far as I'm concerned lol

imho - he evolved into such a *goody two shoes* that I found myself rooting for Jacob simply because he came across as a more substantial character ;D

  9. I definitely think that Nora adds nothing to the story. Maybe I just hate her. Either way...I just don't like her character. Bleh.

  10. I always thought Kate's sister Georgia was pointless in Die For Me, but I didn't really like any of the characters much so I may be biased.

  11. I would go with twins Danny and Drew from Brenna Yovanoff's The Replacement because the story would still exist without them.

  12. Bella Swan from the Twilight series annoys me!

  13. I could easily live without half of the characters in The Forest of Hands and Teeth, especially Mary. She just makes me mad!

  14. Bella from Twilight. Not the most original answer, I know, but she was the most useless, whiniest MC ever.

  15. Hi!

Probably Tom Bombadill from Lord of the Rings. While I was reading it, I thought he was dodgy and even though he turned out to be a good guy, he never added to the main plot line. They left him out of the films so I think he should have been left out of the books.

    Great giveway!

  16. Renesme from Breaking Dawn. She didn't add anything to the book except by just being there and was plainly creepy, and I just can't stand her name - I'd have preferred her to be called Dawn, or something like that.

  17. As soon as I read the question, and before I saw any of the previous responses, I had already thought of Bella from Twilight, and I had to laugh that so many other people thought the same thing! She was just unbelievably annoying! So instead of Bella, I will mention Claudia from Sapphique, which I just finished. I liked her in Incarceron, but she got very annoying herself in the follow up book!

  20. I thought Patrice from the Evernight Series didn't add anything to the story. I could have done without having her in the books.

  21. A character I would love to hate is Miranda from Shift by Em Bailey. That girl really needs to get a life.

  22. in the book 'the man of my dreams'

the main character, Hannah is a girl who grows up depressed, etc.

it totally wasn't what I expected, even though she's the main character,
I grew to dislike her throughout the story. I felt cheated for buying what I thought would be a simple fairytale like story.

    regards,

  23. I've thought long and hard, but I don't think I have read a book yet in which I actually thought a character was worthless to the plot.
I'm not exactually sure what is meant by "love to hate." Assuming it means you love and hate a certain character at the same time, I'll pick Micah Bayer from the Seven Realms series. I've only read the first two books, but I hate him because he's an evil doer, and I love him because his desires help make the plot exciting and I don't think he always means bad or to cause chaos.

  24. I am no good at this. But, well, I kind of liked the Twilight books when I read them. But now when I think about them, I am hating Bella. I always hatet and couldn't stand Jacob, but I used to like Bella :p Until I realized how much she hurts Edward through all the books. And that, to me, is unacceptable. But, well, I found Jacob to be worthless. I would have liked the books so much more if there was no Jacob. :)
    Love, Carina

  25. Bella - Twilight
Clary and Jace - Mortal Instruments.
    I think they're all annoying.

  26. I absolutely hate Ever from Evermore!

  27. I wish the question here would be: What scene from a book was completely useless?

And I would have responded. The alligator scene in "The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer." Could have been completely left out.

However the answer to your question would be. "Peter" from Divergent. I love to hate him. He's just a jerk! I'm glad he got no where because I think I would have stopped reading it. He angered me by him stabbing that guy in the eye. What was that for? I love to hate him! LOL

  28. Nora from Hush Hush series! I want to slap her! She's such a brat!

  29. I would love to read Sleepless. Or well, any of those books listed. xD Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  30. Miranda from the Shift series. OMG. Seriously cannot stand her!

  31. is it OK if I say Jacob in the twilight series? That's what I thought when reading the books, he was just annoying and didn't contribute anythign interesting to the plot. just a couple of nonsensical dialogues.... thanks for the giveaway :)

  32. I love to hate Vee from Becca Fitzpatrick's books I just find her so whiny and she really is pointless to the series. I'm currently reading Silence and she's already getting on my nerves!
