5 Things You Might Not Know About TEMPEST or Julie Cross
by Brenden Deneen (Editor)

1. The book was originally called ENEMIES OF TIME and had 75% more gymnastics!
2. I have a draft of the original manuscript, which I use to blackmail Julie whenever necessary.
3. I wrote the prologue for the first draft of the new book (I politely insisted that she re-title it TEMPEST), which Julie then rewrote to make it… you know… much better.
4. I’m to blame for the “Holy Crap, did he just do that?” ending, so you can send hate mail to me.
5. Julie is an amazing writer, she’s a pleasure to work with, and she and I apparently live on the same frequency because the TEMPEST series (as you now know it) seemed to spark to life (in a big way) as soon as we started emailing about it in 2010 (after I had stupidly rejected it twice).
Brenden Deneen Bio:

Brendan Deneen is a former development/production executive for Scott Rudin and Bob & Harvey
Weinstein (Miramax/Dimension Films/Weinstein Company), and a former literary and film manager,
where he closed dozens of publishing and movie deals. Deneen is currently an Editor at Thomas Dunne Books (a division of St. Martin's Press), where he also launched and runs Macmillan Films.

Five Things You Might Not Know About Julie Cross
from her agent, Suzie Townsend

1. She queried me for two contemporary YA novels before we connected with TEMPEST.
2. If I'm thinking about reading a YA novel, I can always count on the fact that Julie has read it and has an opinion about it. I love getting recommendations from her.
3. All of her emails have at least one typo or missing word, because she's thinking faster than she can type.
4. When she was cleaning up and re-organizing her computer, she sent me emails with all her manuscripts. I have old drafts of TEMPEST, drafts of her other novels, and outlines of all her new shiny ideas tucked away in a folder in my email for safe keeping.
5. She's a fabulous person and an incredibly talented writer. I love working with her. (Okay, you might have already known that one)

Her Bio:

After teaching high school English for several years, Suzie Townsend started her career in publishing at FinePrint Literary Management in January 2009. Now an agent at Nancy Coffey Literary, Suzie is actively looking to build her list. She's an active member of AAR, RWA, and SCBWI.  Suzie is specifically looking for adult romance (historical and paranormal) and fantasy (urban fantasy, science fiction, steampunk, epic fantasy).  In childrens' books she loves YA (all subgenres) and is dying to find great Middle Grade projects (especially something akin to the recent movie SUPER 8).  She's interested in strong characters and voice driven stories: she's particularly keen on strong female protagonists, complex plot lines with underlying political, moral, or philosophical issues, and stories which break out of the typical tropes of their genre. Some of her favorite novels (that she doesn't represent) are Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff, Jellicoe Road and Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta, The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, Jeaniene Frost's Vampire Huntress series, Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series, and Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series.  She drinks too much diet orange soda, has a Starbucks problem (those soy chai lattes are addictive), and lives in Brooklyn with two dogs who know that chewing on shoes is okay but chewing on books is not.

She also keeps a blog.

The year is 2009. Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler. Recruit… or kill him.

  36. As we struggle under the weight of our circumstances when the vision of our hopes and dreams grows dim, we must never forget what Robert Frost wrote about the positive impact that taking a less-traveled direction can make on a person's life.
