The Last Echo (The Body Finder #3) New Cover!!

Violet kept her morbid ability to sense dead bodies a secret from everyone except her family and her childhood-best-friend-turned-boyfriend, Jay Heaton. That is until forensic psychologist Sara Priest discovered Violet’s talent and invited her to use her gift to track down murderers. Now, as she works with an eclectic group of individuals—including mysterious and dangerously attractive Rafe—it’s Violet’s job to help those who have been murdered by bringing their killers to justice. When Violet discovers the body of a college girl killed by “the girlfriend collector” she is determined to solve the case. But now the serial killer is on the lookout for a new “relationship” and Violet may have caught his eye....

I love these covers!  I love how they are so similar, but each one is a different color.  I love things that match! haha!  I'm also intrigued by the title of the book and the description.  The Last Echo....hmmm.....kind of makes it sound like something big is going to happen.  Will Violet lose her ability to hear echos?  It kind of sounds like it.  And what will happen with Rafe?  I can't imagine anything happening to Violet and Jay's relationship, they're just too perfect, but who knows!  I'm excited to find out.  The Body Finder was one of my favorite books of 2010, if you haven't read it...you must read it!!

Kim talked with us a couple of months ago about her covers, (like did you know they're not real flowers?) you can read what she had to say about them here.

Run over to Kim's blog and tell her how much you like the cover!!

Cool article in LosAngeles Times
A mysterious island.

An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.
Have you ever finished a book and after closing it, your first thought was... "How on earth am I going to explain the depth to how much I liked this book?"... Well that's how I feel right now. I loved this book, there is no other way of telling you how amazing this book was. Ransom Riggs is pure genius!

The way Riggs tells a story is so layered with detail and he has a way of making you feel like you are watching the story come alive on the big screen instead of reading it in a book. The idea of using old photographs to tell his story was really cool. I couldn't wait to reach the next photograph in the book because by then I knew the background of the picture, and it all made sense.

For all of you who do not know just yet... Jacob's grandfather Abraham Portman had some wild, crazy stories about some children's home he grew up in. Grandpa Portman was born in Poland and when he turned twelve he was sent to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in Wales during World War II. Grandpa was always afraid of monsters, he said he could see them everywhere. Of course, Jacob and his parents never believed any of his peculiar stories about the little girl who could levitate, the invisible kid, the one who could make fire with her hands and of course, the monsters. Even after grandpa showed him pictures that he saved over the last sixty years or so for proof.

These stories just sounded fabricated, everyone thought Grandpa Portman was losing his mind. Until..... his mysterious death! That's when Jacob convinced his father to take him on a journey, a journey to the mysterious island where Abraham Portman grew up. The setting was on a spooky island that very little happened, and very few people lived there. Jacob and his father stayed in a pub in the upstairs quarters. Everyone seemed a little strange, but nice and pretty normal as far as Jacob was concerned. It wasn't until the second day he arrived that he convinced his father to let him go explore the island on his own.

Guess what happens next???

Yes, he finds the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children . Yet it has been demolished by a World War II bomb. What now? you ask. Well, while he was exploring the house, he finds more vintage pictures of peculiar children doing peculiar things. He also finds odd things like jars of hearts, lungs, eyeballs, brains and other assorted organs. While he is completely freaked out he hears voices... children's voices... peculiar children's voices.

This book was so great, I had high expectations for this book and the book exceeded them greatly. It was really spooky, yet heartwarming and romantic at the same time. I fell in love with the peculiar children. I wanted to protect them, bring them home with me. Yes, I would have adopted them all. The detail Riggs used to develop each of their characters was flawless. No one could have nailed their personalities better. I was sad when the book ended because I just fell in love with each peculiar child.

READ THIS BOOK!

Author Interview: Shelley Workinger Author of Solid and Settling.

Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/SolidSeries

Shelley's Twitter: Twitter.com/SWorkinger

The Solid website: Thesolidseries.com

Shelley Workinger, author of Solid, invited us to be a part of her blog tour to promote her second book in the Solid series, Settling!  And I, of course, agreed!  As part of the tour, we got to do an interview with Shelley!  So, without further adieu, here it is!

First off I’d like to know, if this book were real, what character would you most like to go on a date with, and where would you go? (Can be a platonic date )

I like someone who talks/pushes me into doing things I’m afraid of, so I think Garrett would be the perfect guy to go down in a shark cage with, or something equally ridiculous. Or I could let Miranda take me for a mani-pedi, since I’ve never had one, but I worry that she’d trick me into one of those places where the fish chew the skin off your feet.

Ok, strap on your thinking cap. If a book thief broke into your house and stole one book, which book would you hope he took so that when he read it, he would decide to return it, apologize, and change his
ways?

“The Book Thief,” which he would of course take to be sardonic Oh, but then he might end up crying so much that he can’t find his way back to my house to return it…might have to rethink that one.

If someone said, “Your book changed my life!” what part would you think she was referring to?

I would think it meant she’d discovered a love for reading! I’ve actually had several kids tell me they hated books until I convinced them to give “Solid” a try, which was my whole goal in putting the series together in the first place – to create a fun, fast read that could engage reluctant readers.

If you could play a character in a movie adaptation of your book (whether you looked like him/her or not), which would be the most fun, which would be the hardest, and which would be the most like you?

The most fun would have to be know-it-all Miranda with no boundaries; or Rae if there’d be wild special-effects equipment to showcase her ability. The hardest would be Clio because so much of what goes on with her is introspective – they’d have to do a voice-over for her thoughts, I think, and all those micro facial expressions would be hard. There’s a little of me in everyone, from Garrett’s humor to Clio’s love of lyrics to Bliss’s love of mayo , but no one is a lot like me, except maybe Jack. Like him, I don’t really have a “specialty” (I’m not exceptionally athletic, or musical, or even overly shy like Bliss), but I try to know a little about a lot of things and I’m pretty good at making something out of nothing.

Do you picture anyone famous when you think of your characters?

I did some searching and found some celebrity photos that are close to what I imagine some of my characters to look like. (In these particular shots, anyway – I’m sure these stars all have a gazillion other looks!)

Amanda Bynes for Clio

Kris Allen for Jack

Kellie Pickler for Bliss

 Matthew Lillard for Garrett

Lalaine Paras for Alexis

Anna Maria Perez de Tagle for Miranda

Emmanuelle Chriqui for Rae

Sadao J. Oka II for Xavier

Some of these looks are almost dead on, like Kris for Jack, Kellie for Bliss, and Lalaine for Alexis; some would need a few alterations – Amanda with redder hair for Clio, Emmanuelle with shorter hair for Rae. Xavier is very specific in my mind and I couldn’t find a great match, but Sadao might be in the ballpark without the mustache; Matthew might be more of a personality match for Garrett than a looks one. The Miranda in my mind looks a lot like Anna Maria, but was written differently for the book. I actually never wanted to write descriptions for any of the characters because I wanted readers to be able to picture themselves in the story, but they talked me out of it.

What is the question you wish I had asked, and how would you answer it?

What were you most happily surprised by after the release of “Solid”?
How much fun I’ve had meeting with classes and book clubs! I’m not a speaker (that’s why I write), so when schools and organizations started approaching me to give presentations, I convinced them to let me sit down and talk with their groups instead of at them. I’ve talked with everyone from middle-school girls about their favorite fictional boyfriends, to Boy Scouts about keeping journals of their ideas.  I just believe that you gain something from everyone you meet, and I’m so thrilled with all these new opportunities to connect with people.

Check out my review of Solid here, and stay tuned for my review of Settling!

Thanks so much Shelley for the blog tour and the interview!

Book Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

  • Reading level: Young Adult
  • Hardcover: 352 pages
  • Publisher: HarperTeen (November 15, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0062085484
  • ISBN-13: 978-0062085481

Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days. The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old-girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a world as riveting asThe Hunger Games and a superhero story as thrilling as The X-Men. Full of pulse-pounding romance, intoxicating villainy, and high-stakes choices, Shatter Me is a fresh and original dystopian novel—with a paranormal twist—that will leave readers anxiously awaiting its sequel.

My thoughts:
First of all I must say that Tahereh Mafi is my new favorite author.
Ever.
Out of all of the books I have ever read, she is the best one.
Well, that is just my opinion. But I am pretty sure that once you read Shatter Me
you might actually agree with me.
Which brings me to my second point: Shatter Me was the best book I have ever read.
Yes, I know. Some of you might find this kind of hard to believe since here lately
I have been loving every single book I pick up, but honestly I guess I have just been lucky.
The last couple of books I read before Shatter Me were yes, very very very good,
but Shatter Me devoured me. At some points my jaw was actually hanging open and I re-read some pages before I could fully grasp the amazingness that Tahereh Mafi
gave birth to on those pages.
(Graphic, yes. But you get the idea)
And don't even get me started on how well she developed the characters.
I could be writing this review forever, and well that doesn't exactly fit into my schedule.
So I think I rather stick to my plan of attacking people until they agree to read Shatter Me... Alright, well maybe I will say a little bit on what I thought of the characters.
Juliette is so kickbutt, UGH.
It made me feel like a huge wimp and yet at the same time I freaking loved it.
Oh my goodness. I can't even begin to describe how awesome Juliette is.
And ah, well then there is Adam.
I'm pretty sure Blogger will not be able to contain how much I love Adam.
Plus, I'm afraid all of you reading this might think I'm some freaky fan girl that might
make this into the next Twilight fad and have his name all of my clothes.
No.
Just no.
But to put it a nutshell: I love Adam Kent.
I think mostly because he reminds me of one of my best friends, so it makes the story
seem that a little bit more real (which I am aware it is completely impossible for it to be real but whatever), and yeah because Tahereh Mafi did a really great job of making him sound like the hottest man on Earth. Especially since he has full tattooed sleeves on each arm. (Yes I am one of those weirdo girls who find tattoos extremely attractive on a man)
Anyway, enough about Adam.
I'm SURE you'll get the full picture whenever you read  Shatter Me.
Onward to the other characters:
Tahereh Mafi made each and every character perfect.
Even the characters that only said five words I could perfectly imagine
what they would look like.
Okay well I did exactly what I thought I would do and I got carried away with the characters...
But I have a great idea, IF you already own Shatter Me read it right now.
Just go read it.
If this review didn't convince you to read it, then I honestly don't know what else to say.
But I may or may not come attack you until you read it.

THANK-YOU Tahereh Mafi for writing my new favorite book!
Seriously, I will re-read it forever.
And I cannot even express how badly I want the sequel in my hands right now.
It keeps me up at night.
Thinking about the sequel.

Interview with Alexandra Monir Author of Timeless our Reading Clean Spotlight

Reading Teen is so excited to have Alexandra Monir here today to answer some questions about our Reading Clean Spotlight "Timeless". This singer/songwriter, actor and amazing author sang the songs for the book. Check it out on iTunes. TWO very lucky followers will receive her CD along with the giveaway of this book, so be sure and fill out the form. Reading Clean Spotlight link below!

Click on these links...

RT: What inspired you to write this book?

AM: History is one of my biggest passions, and I've always wished I could go back in time myself- so writing about time-travel was a bit of wish-fulfillment for me! I also loved the concept of two people from different centuries finding each other and falling in love, and that was an idea I really wanted to explore.

RT: I loved Michele Windsor, did someone inspire you as you developed her character?

AM: Thank you! As I developed Michele's character, I knew that I really wanted her to be someone that readers could both relate to and look up to. Since she goes through so much in the story, it was important to me that she be a strong and inspiring person, to have a solid sense of self, and to maintain her sense of humor and optimism. So rather than basing her on someone specific, it was more about me creating a character that I really liked and wanted to spend time writing.

RT: Who was your favorite character in this book?

AM: I love Michele and Philip, but my favorite character has to be Lily- she was just so much fun to write!

RT: You and Phillip Walker share a passion for music, would you like to expand on that?

AM: Music is my first love! I've been a singer/songwriter since I was a teenager. I love combining music with storytelling, such as writing and recording the original songs for Timeless.

RT: Will Timeless be a stand alone or have a sequel?

AM: I'm currently writing the sequel! It's called THE TIMEKEEPER and it publishes next year.
RT: What ritual did you have while writing Timeless?

AM: I always listen to music in my headphones when I write. I had a special TIMELESS playlist, with certain songs corresponding to particular scenes I was writing, which helped me get extra immersed in the story.
RT: Did you have a favorite snack while writing?

AM: Candy! I think I did a pretty solid amount of typing while munching on Swedish Fish.
RT: If you could go back in time, where would you go and why?

AM: I have a whole list of places I'd love to go! Definitely the eras I wrote about in Timeless, especially the Gilded Age and the 1920s. But I'd also really want to go back to the 1950s and meet my grandmother, who passed away before I was born.
RT: What did you do in celebration when you finished writing Timeless?

AM: That was such an exciting time! I remember treating myself to a couple hot stone massages and pedicures.
RT: Can you tell us a snippet/teaser from your favorite part of this book?
AM: My favorite part is definitely when Michele sees Philip in person for the first time. After all these years of dreaming about this mysterious handsome stranger, to discover that he was real was such a huge moment and I loved writing it.
RT: The girl on the cover is a perfect Michele, did you have a part in the design?
AM: I wasn't involved in the cover design, other than giving a worshipful "Thank you!!" to the Random House team who put it together. I absolutely love it!
RT: I know you sang some songs for the book, which came first the music or the book?

AM: The book came first. While I was working on the scenes where Michele & Philip write music together, that's when I wrote their songs.

Again, a big thanks to Alexandra Monir for taking the time to answer some questions about our Reading Clean Spotlight for the month of June.

Don't forget to click on those links above and be sure to enter the giveaway for this amazing romantic time-traveling novel.

Series: If I Stay

It's been three years since the devastating accident . . . three years since Mia walked out of Adam's life forever.

Now living on opposite coasts, Mia is Juilliard's rising star and Adam is LA tabloid fodder, thanks to his new rock star status and celebrity girlfriend. When Adam gets stuck in New York by himself, chance brings the couple together again, for one last night. As they explore the city that has become Mia's home, Adam and Mia revisit the past and open their hearts to the future–and each other.

Told from Adam's point of view in the spare, lyrical prose that defined If I Stay, Where She Went explores the devastation of grief, the promise of new hope, and the flame of rekindled romance.
This book is a sequel to "If I Stay" (my review) and I was so glad to find the continuation of the story of Mia Hall. This book is told from the view point of Mia's former love, Adam Wilde, and takes place 3 years after the accident that killed Mia's parents and young brother. It was the word "former" that threw me for a loop. At the end of the previous book, Adam and Mia were still very close and very much in love. I wanted to find out what had happened to drive them apart, and surprisingly, the book is about Adam trying to find out exactly the same thing.

In the three years that have passed, Mia has been attending Juillard and becoming a world class cellist. Adam's band, Shooting Star, has become hugely popular, playing sold out venues and winning major awards. Adam is the lead singer as well as the writer of their hit songs and has become the singular target of the media while the rest of the band goes largely unnoticed. This has caused a lot of friction between the band members who are about to go on a big European tour. While Adam is living the Rock Star lifestyle he is not a happy guy. He is currently living with Hollywood's leading starlet but keeps himself going with cigarettes and doctor's prescriptions. Adam has one night alone in New York City before heading to England. As he walks the streets, he sees an advertisement for a Young Concert Series featuring none other than Mia Hall. On impulse he buys a ticket and sets in motion a night spent in reminiscing, remorse and reconnection. The question of why Mia stopped taking his calls is answered along with why he has let his life get so out of control.

I did not like this book as much as I did "If I Stay" but it was very satisfying to know what happened to the characters that I liked so much. Both books do a good job of showing what can happen when people are thrown into unexpected circumstances whether they might be considered good circumstances or bad. Both main characters suffered great losses and had to learn how to best put their lives back together and move forward. I would recommend this book to anyone who reads "If I Stay" but I'm not sure if it would be as meaningful to those who haven't read the first one.
