Book Review: The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan

Reading level: Ages 10 and up
Hardcover: 544 pages
Publisher: Hyperion Book CH; First Edition edition (October 4, 2011)
Buy the book: Amazon

In The Lost Hero, three demigods named Jason, Piper, and Leo made their first visit to Camp Half-Blood, where they inherited a blood-chilling quest:

Seven half-bloods shall answer the call,
To storm or fire the world must fall.
An oath to keep with a final breath,
And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death.

Who are the other four mentioned in the prophesy? The answer may lie in another camp thousands of miles away, where a new camper has shown up and appears to be the son of Neptune, god of the sea. . .

My Review

Rick Riordan is a cool guy. How else would he be capable of writing one of the best series in the history of the know galaxy? I don't know.... I don't know.

My question is, how can he write books this incredibly good?! It's like Riordan knows exactly what to write in order to make everybody love it. I do not understand it, but I would very much love to have this gift.

The Son of Neptune is really an incredible installment to The Heroes of Olympus series. I really haven't been so entertained by a book in quite awhile. And I am honestly baffled, because in nine books, Rick Riordan has never once failed to live up to my expectations. In fact, they always seem to far surpass them.

The original Percy Jackson series had many characters and locations that were consistent and recurring throughout the five books, whereas in The Heroes of Olympus series, and more particularly in The Son of Neptune, many new characters are introduced. At first, I didn't particularly enjoy this idea... but as I continued reading the book, I found that these additions to the series were very enjoyable. The Roman mythology that was mixed with the Greek was done so perfectly. Although it was sometimes a wee bit difficult to remember both the Greek and Roman names of each God and Goddess, it was an awesome plot that had me hooked until the last page, which I never wanted to reach.

This book will most likely be a favorite to anyone who like mythology, fantasy, or any one of Rick Riordan's previous books. And now, I must wait centuries (Or so it seems) for the third book in this series, The Mark of Athena.
