Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident. My review of Hex Hall & Demonglass
Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?
At a Glance:
What a fantastic ending to an exciting, mystical and just plain fun series! If you were a fan of Sophie in Hex Hall and Demonglass, you will fall in love with her again in Spell Bound.
What is it about this chick?
Sophie is just awesome! I worried about her a little in Hex Hall, and her inability to demand proper treatment from the arrogance of Archer Cross, but boy did this girl turn around. I just adore her! There are very few books that make me literally laugh out loud, but Sophie has me laughing on every other page. She is witty, fierce, loyal, and determined, in short, all my favorite characteristics in a heroine.
That Archer grew on me!
In Hex Hall, I have to admit, I was not an Archer Cross fan. I mean, don't get me wrong, I knew that there was some reason that he was behaving the way he was, I just hated that Sophie didn't know, and she put up with it anyway. But this guy turned on the charm in Demonglass, and it just kept coming in Spell Bound. I love how sarcastic and witty he is, and I especially love the way he treats Sophie (now).
What about Cal?
Yeah, I think if I could have my pick, I'd definitely pick Cal. I wish that he had a little bigger role in Spell Bound, and that we would have gotten to know him better, but at least this way, he stays perfect in my mind! He's just SO sweet, and charming, and caring, and smart. Yeah, I'd definitely have to go with Cal.
What I love about this romance is that it's light and fun. Even in the "tough" times, Archer and Sophie are so funny together. They play off each other with this adorable banter that is just TOO CUTE! I could seriously read their back-and-forth all day.
You want to know about the storyline?
I'm incredibly impressed by the fact that Rachel Hawkins has now written three books that are constantly in motion. There is seriously ALWAYS something happening. There's never a dull moment, never a time when I think "filler!" And it's not just action, it's mystery and suspense. There are plot twists and turns throughout the entire series, and this book is no exception. I never got bored. I read the whole thing in a day (which, for me is rare), and I think I could keep on reading this series if it hadn't ended (which is also rare). There were a couple of times where I thought that things might have been a little too easy for Sophie, especially toward the end, but it wasn't a big enough deal to ruin anything for me. Overall, I just really, really enjoyed it! I don't know how Rachel Hawkins makes such a dark and twisted story so light and fun to read, but she's certainly a master!
Would I buy it?
Yes, I would definitely buy it! I'm going to her signing tonight and can't wait to gush!
