Dying of a broken heart is just the beginning.... Welcome to forever.

BRIE'S LIFE ENDS AT SIXTEEN: Her boyfriend tells her he doesn't love her, and the news breaks her heart—literally.

But now that she's D&G (dead and gone), Brie is about to discover that love is way more complicated than she ever imagined. Back in Half Moon Bay, her family has begun to unravel. Her best friend has been keeping a secret about Jacob, the boy she loved and lost—and the truth behind his shattering betrayal. And then there's Patrick, Brie's mysterious new guide and resident Lost Soul . . . who just might hold the key to her forever after.

With Patrick's help, Brie will have to pass through the five stages of grief before she's ready to move on. But how do you begin again, when your heart is still in pieces?

My Review:

I have to say, I had my doubts about this book.  I wanted a happy book (I think I've been reading too many distopians lately and I wanted to read something where they weren't constantly in mortal danger.)  And when Andye went to ALA Midwinter, I asked her to pick up something for me that had an Anna and the French Kiss feel to it.  When she told a few publishers what I had asked for, someone lead her to this.  She brought it back and I was completely ecstatic... then I read the back where it clearly states that Lauren Oliver says it is, "Inventive, gorgeous, funny and yes ... heartbreaking. You will absolutely love this book."  and one word stood out to me like no other: heartbreaking.  I believe I said something like: "When the heck are happy and heartbreaking the same thing?!?! NEVER."

I eat my words.

Yes, The Catastrophic History of You and Me is both happy and heartbreaking.  Yes, at the same time.  I couldn't explain it any better.  It is both exciting and frustrating, lovable and agonizing, hilarious and touching, happy and heartbreaking.  And it is a love story unlike any I've ever read before.  The twists and turns may just blow your mind even while they break your heart.  So just drop any expectations or theories you might already have about what it's about or how it ends... because you're bound to be wrong anyways.  Just be prepared to fall in love...

  1. This book reminds me of the Ghostgirl series by Tonya Hurley which I really enjoyed.
I shall give this one a go also :)

    1. I've never read that one, but I'll have to look into it now! Hope you enjoy it!!

  2. Thank you very much for your review. I have a copy of this on my shelf and really hope to get to it soon - especially now after reading how much you enjoyed it! :)

  3. I totally agree with you- I wasn't expecting this book to be so good! I loved it to pieces. It's happy, sad, heartbreaking, and everything between. I never saw the plot twist coming- but after that, everything started to add up for me. Great review, you definitely captured everything that I felt about this book!

    1. Thanks so much!! I'm so glad you felt the same way!!:)

  4. Now I can't wait to read this one! I love when heartbreaking and happy moments can mix together to make you feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster. I love when I can care so deeply about the characters that I cry and cheer with them for the whole book. If this book is how I think it will be then I'm in for an EPIC ride. It is really rare to find a book that can have you wanting to throw it across the room not because the book is bad but because you care so much about it and something devastating or emotional just happened.

Sorry for the rambling but thank you for the great review!

    1. Ahhh, I live the rambling! That's exactly it, hope you love it!!

  5. It's not normal if a book almost makes me cry. It's even more rare if a book makes me cry, let alone bawl. So I'm always shocked and impressed and in love with the books that do, or at least but me on a high-feeling kick. This book did that.
