Galen, a Syrena prince, searches land for a girl he's heard can communicate with fish. It’s while Emma is on vacation at the beach that she meets Galen. Although their connection is immediate and powerful, Galen's not fully convinced that Emma's the one he's been looking for. That is, until a deadly encounter with a shark proves that Emma and her Gift may be the only thing that can save his kingdom. He needs her help--no matter what the risk.
At a Glance:
Although awkward at times, Of Poseidon was full of intrigue, mystery, romance and humor. If you're a fan of mermaids and snark, you'll probably enjoy this one!
The Funny:
I'm going to start out with Emma, because she was, by far, my favorite thing about this book. She seriously cracked me up! She said every last thing that was on her mind, and she was just funny. There were a few times when the snark was a little much, and she would get mad at some of the most bizarre things, but overall, I really enjoyed her character and her voice.
Galen:
Galen was a little awkward, being that he wasn't a human, and not entirely accustomed to our way of talking and behaving. Some of the things he said rivaled Emma in the comedy department, but more in a roll your eyes kind of way. I just picture Emma rolling her eyes at some of his comments. Especially when he tried to call her "Boo." I may have cringed a little on that one. But he was mostly really sweet, after he learned that Emma wasn't going to take his commanding, and watching him learn the ways of humanness, with a strong female was entertaining.
Tension Galore:
There's definitely lots of tension and frustration in the romance department. Even though Galen and Emma have an immediate attraction, they fight it constantly, for ever changing reasons. Whether it's because it's against the law, or because they aren't sure how the other feels, they just can't seem to get the timing right. This, of course, makes it all the more fantastic when they finally do....kind of. :D I'm definitely a fan of the tension.
But there's mermaids:
I enjoyed this story, and the characters, but I just have a hang-up when it comes to mermaids. Oh, I know they don't want to be called that, they're Syrena, but still.....they're mermaids, or even worse, mermen. UGH! I don't know why I have such an issue. I mean, I've loved vampire books, and werewolf books, and even dragon books, but there's something about a guy turning into a fish that just brings out the EEW! Does he smell like fish? Does Emma taste fish on him when she kisses him?
And then there's the mating:
This was something else I just cringed at every time it came up......which was every other page. It was constant with the mating. He's my mate. You're my mate. They're going to mate. I want to mate with him. They have to find an island to mate. YUCK!! That word!! It just conjures up all sorts of nasty! I had a really hard time getting past this.
Oh, and that dreaded CLIFFHANGER!
I'm not sure I've been involved in a cliffhanger as bad as this one. It literally felt like the story just stopped right in the middle. I need some closure! OK, I don't need it, I just really, really appreciate it. I do understand the desire to make us want for the next book, but it makes me....completely....INSANE!
All in all:
I did enjoy this book, even with the mermen and the mating :P It was sweet and funny and romantic, and I think, worth the read. I especially enjoyed reading it during the summer while sitting by the pool. It helped me to embrace my inner mermaid ;D

I'm not a huge fan of mermaids either but you're right this book was funny and cute. Has definitely been my favorite mermaid book so far.
ReplyDeleteGreat review! :) That is a bit gross, about how she might be able to taste fish on him when they kiss haha! I hadn't thought about it like that before :) I've heard tons of great things about this book so I'm super excited to read it!
ReplyDeleteI've read Forgive my Fins which was a really good mermaid book and it was the perfect summer read :)
I just read this book yesterday, and I LOVED IT! It's one of my favorite reads for 2012, and personally I found the stuff about mating quite hilarious, because they rarely used it in the literal form - they always used it in a joking matter! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review. I really enjoyed this book too. I have to say that I saw that ending coming from early on, but just didn't know it would be the actual end of this book. I liked the snarky humor in the book and it was a nice quick summer read. I totally agree with the whole "mating" thing. It was a bit disturbing lol!!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I think mermaids are cool and I have read so many great things about this book! I can't wait to read it! Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteI feel kind of neutral when it comes to mermaids. Sometimes they are cute, sometimes they are funny but sometimes mermaids are kind of creepy. I enjoyed your book review. It made me want to read the book. I liked that you used a clip from French Kiss because it is one of my top 10 favorite movies.
ReplyDeleteYeah the cliffhanger was like, "WHAT?!?!" I actually got onto my computer to see if I somehow missed pages LOL.

I haven't read any mermaid books so far. But I've heard so many good things about this book, and Hopefully I'll win it here and get a chance to read it.Thanks :]
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any mermaid books before either. But the characters definitely sound interesting.
ReplyDeleteHaha the mating thing does sound awkward. But great review! I definitely want to read this!
ReplyDeleteI love books about mermaids. This one looks awesome! I can't wait to read it!
ReplyDeleteAnd the mating thing is really awkward. I mean, how do mermaids even mate???
I've really been wanting to read this one so I'm kinda disappointed it only got 4 pieces from you. Perhaps it would've gotten more without the mermen/mating issue? lol I totally get the mating thing, though! But still, loved the review and thanks for the giveaway!

I like mermaids, but have never actually read a book about them. So this one would be a first, and I'm totally intrigued :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat review, and I'm so excited to read this book! I got to meet Anna Banks at a stop on the Fierce Reads tour last week and while I don't think I've read anything about mermaids since The Little Mermaid when I was a kid, I am pumped at all of the excellent feedback this debut novel has been getting.

haha I used to read lots of mermaid books when I was little. This looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteI think mermaids are pretty awesome and this book sounds like fun! Your review was honest =]
ReplyDeleteI have only read a couple of mermaid novels, but i LOVED them! Ever since i saw the cover for Of Poseidon i have been obsessed with trying to get my hands on it lol. If i don't win it, ill just have to go to the bookstore and buy it, but with so many books on my TBR list i feel bad buying more lmao.
ReplyDeleteI read a digital ARC of the book and it's one of the books I want to buy in book form (even an ARC) because I absolutely loved it! I had none of the issues did. Maybe, just suggesting you have The Little Mermaid in the back of your mind when you think of mermaids and a guy being one just doesn't fit, even though there were mermen in that. I had boys so we didn't do the Little Mermaid, Ariel thing. I have read several stories with mermen in them and I think it's a refreshing change. The only thing that bothered me in this one was that Galen would deny himself a chance at happiness and allow the girl he loves to be forced to marry someone she doesn't love all for the sake of the rules. But of course, we know what happened. And I saw that ending coming.

Great review! I'm scared of the cliffhanger, but I've heard good things about this book.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read a book with mermaids, so i think this would be my first! I love how you can express yourself with the Meg Ryan's gift, that same reaction I've seen in some reviews I've read about this book.
ReplyDeleteI think mermaids are my second favourite mythical creatures. They are fascinating and I've always loved them since Ariel.
ReplyDeleteI feel like Mermaids are becoming a new IT thing in YA. Interested to read this one.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any books about mermaids yet, but I want to. This one sounds really good! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI have not read any books about mermaids. I find the idea of them intriguing. Not sure how it translates on to the page.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any mermaid books but this sounds great!
ReplyDeleteI love your review, it's informative and honest:)
Thanks so much:)
I've read Siren and it was not a good book but the reviews for Of Poseidon are so great that I'm ready to give mermaids a second chance :)
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the giveaway!
I don't know really what I feel about mermaids? I was a little reticent about reading about mermaids, proof that I didn't read anything until now :)
ReplyDeleteBut you made me curious :d to be honest here.
thanks for the chance to start reading about this creatures..xoxo
I've been wanting to read this book for a while. Great review! :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I've really enjoyed a lot of different mermaid books :)
ReplyDeleteI've never read a merm. book before, but this one looks pretty awesome.
ReplyDeleteHi! The little mermaid was my favorite Disney movie when I was younger, I always wanted to be a mermaid! I love the way you did your review and I love funny character! I hope I can get my hands on this one!
ReplyDeleteI love mermaids! WHen I was little I wanted to be one and Disney's The Little Mermaid was my favorite movie. *-*
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! :)
I want to read this book so bad!! Glad you enjoyed it!! Personally, I adore mermaid stories, there are too many vampires and wolves these days!
ReplyDeleteI actually haven't read a mermaid book before but I am very excited for Of Poseidon. I can tell from the review that this will be a very unique way. Especially how Galen is described, I can already see myself laughing at his comments. What also intrigues me is that there are two different romances going on the story, and even though Rayna doesn't seem very nice and Toraf is a flirt, I look forward to seeing this happen.
ReplyDeleteI am so eager to read this book!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any books with mermaids yet but this one is on my TBR list for sure. I love books full of romantic tension and I don't even mind cliffhangers!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE mermaids! LOL when i was little i wanted to be a mermaid lol just like Ariel:)

I love mermaid books as long as they aren't too Disney. I really love your review, and I might wait to read this book a little longer because of the crazy cliffhanger. I love your pics at the end LOL!
ReplyDeleteIts been awhile since I've read a mermaid book. Love the review! This book has been on my TBR list forever.
ReplyDeleteGreat review. I really enjoy snark so I think this is a book for me. I have heard a lot of mixed opinions on the mermaids in this novel though so I can't wait to see for myself.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any mermaid books before I read Of Poseidon, but it made me really like them and now I'm reading Wrecked by Anna Davies and I'm going to read Tera Lynn Childs mermaid series! :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoy some Mermaid books. But lately, they've been becoming too similar. Such as Ripple and Lies Beneath being both about killer mermaids. Of Poseidon and The Vicious Deep about claiming royal heritage.
ReplyDeleteI really haven't read any mermaid books, besides the childern's books I have bought for my daughter. This sounds really intersting though and I would love to get my hands on this
