After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.
At a Glance:

Throne of Glass is a thrilling high fantasy, full of fighting, mystery and romance.  Though it isn't my personal favorite high fantasy, I know that it will be an instant love of many, and may even bring a new wave of readers to this genre.

A High Fantasy That's Really For Teens:

Throne of Glass is the first Young Adult High Fantasy novel that I felt was not only written about teenagers, but also written for teenagers.  Though serious high fantasy fans may find this book less complex, those who don't normally find themselves drawn to this genre may discover that this book is the perfect fit for them.  I actually see it becoming bigger than any other YA high fantasy out there right now.  I guess we'll see!

Fascinating storyline:

I really loved the storyline in Throne of Glass.  There was just so much going on!  It's funny because it actually really reminded me of The Hunger Games, like if you mixed The Hunger Games, Touch of Power (Maria V Snyder), and Graceling.  With the assassin competition, a strange beast on the loose, and horrible people plotting her death at any given moment, Celaena never had a dull moment.  I loved the competition, the strange magical element and wondering who was evil and who wasn't.

Oh Love Triangles:

I think this is the first time that I've ever read a love triangle, and didn't have a strong opinion one way or another about who she ends up with.  I mean, I do have a favorite, but I honestly liked them both.  I read a tweet from Sarah saying that she hopes there are more books in this series than just a trilogy, so I wonder if she'll end up with either of them, or if by the end, they'll be someone completely new.  Though I don't feel like her feelings were fully developed for either of the guys, there was definitely a fair share of romance.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the "slow and steady wins the race" guy :D

Not My Favorite Heroine:

One thing that I didn't care for, unfortunately, was Celaena.  I just didn't connect with her at all.  I felt like she was arrogant, and whiny, and really immature.  I also had a hard time being absorbed into the world because she was so "modern feminist" in a world that seems to be medieval.   Don't get me wrong, I love a strong heroine, but I just didn't see her as that strong.  I think it might have helped if I had read the prequels, and seen her in action, but it seemed like we were constantly told how amazing she was (mostly by her), but never really shown it.  And some of her behavior was just so childish, in a world where she would have been considered, and treated like a woman.  I did find myself rooting for her, though.  I'm hoping that in future books, she will grow and become a little more relatable for me.

What Else?

There were a lot more things I liked, and a few more I didn't like.  I really liked the supporting characters, especially Nox and Nehemia.  I think Nehemia could get her own book!  I do wish that there had been more action, a few of the "trials" were just mentioned instead of described.  I like the magical elements and the mystery, but I thought it was too predictable.  I saw a lot of potential with plot twists and such that just didn't happen. Overall, I'd say this just book just seemed too "young" for me.

  4. Great review! I have heard really fantast things about Throne of Glass and I really want to start it as soon as possible! :) I definitely think the fact that it was written for teenagers makes it appeal so much more to teens instead of adults who are fans of young adult fiction :)

  10. Well I'm glad that this will be more relatable to teens. High fantasy is a really difficult genre for most people. You either tend to love it or hate it. I'm not a huge high fantasy fan since it always seems like in high fantasy the author will take five pages to talk about how green the grass is but that is a staple of that genre. So I'm hoping this toned down high fantasy will keep me more interested.

Thanks for the great review. :)

  32. I noticed you said that this book's doppelganger was Graceling, and I was JUST thinking that this book sounded similar to Graceling! Graceling seems a bit better, if what you say about the main character is true, but this book still seems worth giving a go!

  72. I love this concise and even-handed review! It's funny what you mention about Celaena, how it seems like we're told a lot about her abilities but aren't actually shown them. I've only read the novellas at this point, and that was exactly how I felt about her and her reputation - a lot of telling, not enough showing. I also found her a little too modern for her time and arrogant, but like you, I'm still somehow interested in her. Despite finding the novellas fun if predictable (sometimes frustratingly so), I'm still looking forward to reading the novel.

    Thanks for this giveaway!
