Halloween Traditionsby Tonya Hurley
Halloween is the most wonderful time of the year for me. I tend to really go all out and get an early start. I probably begin thinking about my daughter’s costume in the Spring. This year its Wednesday Addams, complete with vintage dress that I picked up in Portland, Oregon on tour. I had it redone with vintage buttons, handmade collar and sleeves. She’s been Hit Girl from Kick Ass, Charlie Chaplin and Marie Antoinette in the past, so I've set the bar pretty high for myself . As soon as the calendar flips from September to October, my family is off to a nearby pumpkin farm where we pick from an amazing selection of gigantic pumpkins and creepy looking gourds for the porch. Once the pumpkins, gourds and corn stalks are unloaded, it’s time for the window dressings. I like to do murderous floor to ceiling black paper cutouts and various bloody clings for the windows throughout the house turning our old farm house into a faux crime scene for the month. Then its off to the markets and local shops for some fun candy and toys to giveaway. Trick or treaters get IV bags filled with red, sugary gel, edible zombie parts, sticky eyeballs, glow in the dark rats, and occassionally a signed ghostgirl book. Finally, depending on the weather, we light the first fire of the season and share some hot cocoa and a caramel apple with my daughter and husband as we watch the old classic Horror films -- Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy and The Wolfman. When Halloween finally does roll around, I take my daughter trick or treating in Brooklyn. It's amazing there, everyone roaming the streets as zombies and princesses. After that, I start my countdown for next year and wait impatiently for Halloween to roll around again!
