Interview: HOOKED by Liz Fichera

Read my review of HOOKED here.

Hey Liz! It's really great to meet you! The first question I had, (probably along with everyone else) is why did you choose to write about an American Indian?

Hi, there! Nice to meet you too. Living in the American Southwest, Native American culture surrounds me. It would only be natural to include a Native American character (we have over 20 tribes in Arizona) and I’m surprised, frankly, that there aren’t more Native American characters in contemporary YA novels. That said, I got the idea for HOOKED while I was driving down a stretch of desolate desert road near my home called Pecos Road. Pecos Road borders the Gila River Indian Community. I got this image of a Native American girl and she was waving a golf club at me.

What research did you do on their culture?

I am neighbors with the Gila River Indian Community. I’m also fortunate to have had a number of Native American women as beta-readers. Some of my research was done on-line but much of it was done just by talking to my neighbors and living beside the Gila community.

Are you a golfer? If so, what's your handicap, and do you play from the women's tees?

I like to golf but I am a horrible golfer. I have a lot of good golfers in my family, though. My father was a great golfer and my husband is also a very good golfer. Fortunately I had a lot of inside help on the sport. Yes, I play from the women’s tees. Maybe if I had more time to practice/play, that will change one day. J

Did you base Fred or Ryan off of anyone you know?

Fred and Ryan came strictly from my imagination.

What was your favorite scene to write about?

I loved writing the scene where Fred and Ryan first met up at night at the end of Pecos Road, following their impromptu golf date at the country club.

If you could go on a date with one of your characters (platonic or otherwise), who would it be and what would you do?

Sam Tracy! He is my fictional boyfriend and would have been exactly the kind of guy I would have crushed on in high school. He loves the outdoors so I think I would suggest a hike up Telegraph Pass as our first date.

If you could sucker-punch one of your characters, who would it be? (Say Seth :P haha)

LOL! Ah, Seth. Seth is overtly unhinged but Gwyneth’s is more covertly manipulative. I may have to disagree with you on this and say Gwyneth.

I saw that there's going to be a companion book. Who are the main characters and will Fred and Ryan make an appearance?

Sam Tracy and Riley Berenger were two of my fave characters in HOOKED. It was so much fun to develop and write their intertwining stories for PLAYED. Fred and Ryan make several appearances in PLAYED but the focus is on Sam and Riley.

Thanks so much for your time! I really enjoyed reading Hooked!

Thanks so very much for reading HOOKED and for inviting me to talk with you today! <3

But Fred’s presence on the team isn’t exactly welcome — especially not to rich golden boy Ryan Berenger, whose best friend was kicked off the team to make a spot for Fred.

But there’s no denying that things are happening between the girl with the killer swing and the boy with the killer smile...

GET HOOKED ON A GIRL NAMED FRED.
