Second Hand Saturday 1-2-13

Welcome to Second Hand Saturday!
In an attempt to clear our bookshelves, and pass on great used books to our stalkers followers, we have decided to hold weekly giveaways of some of the books on our bookshelves! Every Saturday, we will post the books available, and the following Saturday, we will announce the winner and our next challenge. The winner will get to choose a book from the list and we will ship it to that lucky person! Each week we will have a different challenge to complete.

This Week's Question:
I'm still reading the GONE series (give me a break, people, it's 6 books!!) and there have been some moments.....ok.....a LOT of moments, where my mouth dropped to the floor and I literally said, "That did NOT just happen!" Can you think of any moments you've had like that when reading? What were they? (Put *spoiler* before your post if it is one.)

Just comment below to be entered!

And this week's winner is...

Brenna Mae

Email me at Readingteen1(at) with your book choice. Please put "winner" in the subject line. You have one week to claim your prize!

  1. *spoiler*

    Delirium by Lauren Oliver when.....

at the very end of the book, Lena and ALex were trying to escape and as Lena jumps over the fence and looks back, ALex is still on the other side with blood on his shirt and being tackled down by the guys chasing them.

  2. +JMJ+

The first one that comes to mind is . . .

. . . the scene in C.S. Lewis's Last Battle in which King Tirian receives news that Cair Paravel has been taken by the Calormenes and that all its Narnian defenders are dead. It was the first inkling I had that this final book in the series was not going to be a "typical" Narnian novel--that is, the first inkling that it was the end for Narnia. And I was shocked because I had innocently thought that Narnia would last forever.

  3. I think that most of my "That did NOT just happen!" moments are because of the sheer stupidity of characters & storylines. I will not be mean & say the names of books.

  4. **Vampire Academy Spoiliers**
Ohmyword, this giveaway is AMAZE!!! They're soooo many books to choose from!! Well, when i think of 'jaw-dropping book moments', so many damn novels come to mind!! But i'd have to say, the biggest one that i can think of at the moment was when Dimitri Belikov turned into a Strigoi in Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead. If you haven't read this series, i strongly advise that you do because it'll change your life...for real! Anyways, so Dimitri is this Russian Adonis/Hotness incarnate and throughout the first 2 books, he's seen as this uber-badass Guardian, who is basically unstoppable. They'd been many fights between Dimitri and Strigoi, and he always came out on top. So, you can imagine my surprise when he ended up being turned into one. The fight was incredibly intense, but i figured the good-guys would come out on top. I mean, this is Dimitri Belikov we're talking about, he pratically breathes fighting Strigoi. When the Strigoi caught him by surprise and bit him, that was the first phase of jaw-dropping. I truly believed poor Dimka was dead. That in itself was the most unexpected and unbelievable moments i'd ever read. I couldn't even finish reading the rest of the book because i was in shock. I just stared at it and tried not to cry :/ Ahhh, i felt like such a wimp! A couple of hours later, i worked up the courage to finish the book. Imagine my surprise when i found out Dimitri wasn't actually dead; but a Strigoi. He'd been turned into the very thing he hated the most and killed for a living. Definitely didn't see that coming. BIGGEST. CURVEBALL. EVER!!! Seriously, i'll never get over that moment!

    1. Oh my God, haha, I totally get you :)

  5. *spoiler*
So I was reading EONA, and when Eona got attracted to the bad guy Ido and a love triangle developed, my jaw totally dropped. I was like "WHAT?!" because in the first book, EON, there was not even the slightest hint of romance between these two and I had assumed that Ido was like forty or something with a rat-like face and mustache. Then, suddenly, in the second book, he became attractive -.-

    Okay, that was my moment.

  6. The endings of Delirium and Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver. Those are some of the biggest cliffhangers ever. Now I'm dying to know who Lena ends up with in the last book!

  7. Biggest OMG moments for me even though I knew they were coming so they weren't exactly shocking were: (And I won't even put why)

Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver - That ending!!

Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout - Oh, for the love of alien babies... that ending!!!

Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout - AHHHH!! It kills me that it ended that way!! (But I totally understand)

  8. Don't know if it's international but...

OPAL: the last few pages when Kat and Daemon... and she.... and him... and he said... and she... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix: NO, just.... no. Sirius, you can't be dead. I mean.... WHY OH WHY OH WHY *still crying*

  9. *spoiler*

A Song of Ice and Fire when I discovered that Catelyn was alive

  10. *spoiler*

This has happened to me many times, but the first that comes to mind is in the Son of Neptune when Nico is at Camp Jupiter and then I went on an incoherant rant while pacing around my room for 5 minutes.

  11. *Spolier*

When, in Dust & Decay by Jonathan Maberry, Tom Imura dies. Through the first and second book, you think he's this invincible man, but then he's killed and it really hits you hard.

  12. The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin. The end of the book I was having a Are You Serious moment. Loved that book

  13. Spoiler! In "Looking for Alaska" I was shocked when Alaska died in the car accident.

  14. I agree with Pandemonium at the ending!! Also, the ending of Requiem...mostly because I was like "THAT'S IT?!" Oh, oh! *MINOR SPOILER* And in Shadow and Bone when you find The Darkling had nefarious purposes for Alina. I was all on Team Darkling and them BAM!

  15. I have one that hasn't been said yet! The Evolution of Mara Dyer! I was reading it and then I got up to the last few pages and omg, I was thinking 'NO WAY.' I didn't see that coming. AT ALL.

  16. I think the worst jaw dropping moment I've read was in Mockingjay
when Prim died that horrible death. I was like, "NO! She can't be dead." She was like the only person Katniss really loved and Katniss really needed her and I didn't think she would die because why would an author off such a needed character? And I kept going back and reading that scene over and over again because I just couldn't grasp the concept that Prim was really dead. I was really mad at Suzanne Collins when she did that. I still cry when I read that scene.

In INSURGENT when Tris finds out her brother is actually working for the enemy. I literally slammed the book shut for a second and called him something that would not be said in a Disney film.

In the Red Wedding massacre when the Frey killed Robb Stark and Catelyn (or at least we thought...). I was all NOOOO!!!!

  19. The ending of Pandemonium. That was insane! I was literally SHOCKED, like omg-i-can't-believe-this-just-happened,-what-i-do-with-my-life SHOCKED!

  20. *spoiler* In The Nightmare Garden, when the main character's friend turns out to be a monster. :/

  21. I was reading Deadline and that cliffhanger was a real jaw dropper. I remember predicting what was going to happen about four paragraphs before it actually did and the whole time I was reading the rest of it, I was just like, "No. Nope. No freaking way. What the hell? This is not possible!"

  22. *spoiler* In the Evernight Academy by Claudia Gray, the vampire-born but hasn't completed the change protagonist died and turned into a ghost instead.. and her vampire-hunter boyfriend, became the vampire instead! "Whar the hell?"

  23. *spoiler*
In Breaking Dawn, the Jacob imprinting thing is still a shock to me.

  24. As a matter of fact, yes! I just read Taking Chance by Molly McAdams and *****spoiler****** She kills off Chase like half way through the book. I was so mad, I refused to finish it.

  25. to me this was the very end of the Hunger Games book 3 - I had to reread that again to get what happened

  26. I remember I had those moments while reading The Hunger Games, specifically right as the games start.

  27. Haha, lots of Hunger Games here. I should say the same too, especially in the 2nd book- Catching Fire.Oh, and of course Harry Potter. Your jaw drops at every turn of the page!

  28. Oooh yes, Hunger Games epilogue. I just can't even.

  29. HAHAHAHAHA! These comments! OMG! Half the time I'm reading "spoiler" and then book title and then reading on if I don't care. Someone mentioned Song of Ice and Fire and my brain took a few seconds to say STTTTOOOOPPPP before I read it. Luckily they didn't mention which book and I have a bad memory so I won't remember that spoiler. *fingers crossed*

Moving on. Shocking moments in books. NO SPOILERS.
Having mentioned Song of Ice and Fire; the ending of Game of Thrones OOOHHHHH MYYY GOODD!!!! WORST ENDING IN HISTORY AND I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE GEORGE MARTIN DID THAT!!!! ARGH!

Harry Potter. Way too many *gasp* moments to list to be honest.

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier - I know it's not YA but I NEVER saw that truth coming. EVER!

Shatter Me - Need I spell it out? Two words: Baby Scene.

  30. Lots of moments in The Hunger Games and A Million Sun's by Beth Revis. She really has no qualm about killing characters off. Some, I was sad to see go and others, I was anxious for their demise
