Julie Cross's Vortex is the thrilling second installment of the Tempest series, in which the world hangs in the balance as a lovelorn Jackson must choose whom to save.If you haven't read TEMPEST (book 1), you can find my review here.
Jackson Meyer has thrown himself into his role as an agent for Tempest, the shadowy division of the CIA that handles all time-travel-related threats. Despite his heartbreak at losing the love of his life, Jackson has proved himself to be an excellent agent. However, after an accidental run in with Holly - the girl he altered history to save - Jackson is once again reminded of what he's lost. And when Eyewall, an opposing division of the CIA, emerges, Jackson and his fellow agents not only find themselves under attack, but Jackson begins to discover that the world around him has changed and someone knows about his erased relationship with Holly, putting both their lives at risk all over again.
At a Glance:
Vortex not only lives up to it's predecessor, Tempest, it surpasses it. If a book about time travel wasn't enough, just add a little secret agent-ness to the mix, and you have a thrilling read you won't want to put down. This book had more action, more mystery, more suspense, and more character development. It's one sequel you won't want to miss.
When I put in this audiobook, it immediately transported me back to the world that Julie created. I loved the familiar feeling that the voice of Matthew Brown was for me with this book. He just IS Jackson for me, so it was perfect. And every time I hear his narration, I think he gets better and better. I can't imagine NOT listening to this series.
Ok, I'm going to be honest, I don't like the cover. It looks very middle grade, or indie publisher (not that there's anything wrong with indie....) to me. The first cover was much better.
Tons of action! This was like Back to the Future mixed with Jumper topped with Alias. It was great!
Not a lot of romance in this one, as Jackson has said goodbye to his life with Holly, but he does reminisce some about her, and catches glimpses of her from time to time. It's enough to keep you hoping that there's still a future for them.
Jackson has definitely grown in this book. He's learned to put others before himself, even if it means that he's hurt in the process. He's also learning to be a pretty kick-butt guy, so he doesn't have to rely on someone else to watch his back. And since there are always people out to get him, that's a good thing!
Favorite Supporting Character:
Kendrick! She is Jackson's partner, and she is so good for him! I loved the completely platonic relationship that they had, it was really refreshing.
Something I loved:
All the secret agent stuff. I think that's why I liked this one even more than the first.
Something(s) I hated:
Stewart. I know we're supposed to kind of sympathize with her, but I just couldn't stand her most of the time. Plus she cussed constantly, which just made her sound like she was overcompensating, trying to be tough.
YES! Huge cliffhanger! I don't appreciated it one bit :P
Would I recommend it?
If you read the first one, and were on the fence about it, I think you should give this one a shot. You may like it more, like I did. If you haven't picked up Tempest yet, and you like time travel, then you should get on that!
Will I buy/keep it?
I'll keep the audio.
