Today we have Katie Cotungno on the blog to talk about her book How to Love! Make sure to follow the whole tour on Mundie Girls Tours!
What's something that you admire about Reena?
I really like how Reena just keeps going, no matter what life throws at her. Her dreams are dashed in a lot of different ways at a really young age, but she does what she can to overcome the situation and make the best of things, even though life looks so much different than she thought. I think that's quietly admirable.
What inspired you to write Reena's story?
I'm different from Reena in a lot of ways, the most obvious being that I don't have a baby. But I went to Catholic school for thirteen years, and I grew up going to South Florida every summer to visit my family. I also met my fiancé when I was in high school, so I think stories about first loves tend to resonate with me. I started How to Love in high school, and the first completed draft was my senior thesis at Emerson College--the very first scene I wrote was Sawyer and Reena meeting in a grocery store, what eventually became the opening of the book.
How would you describe Swayer in 5 words or less?
A charming, good-hearted screwup.
For fans of Sarah Dessen and John Green, How to Love is a breathtaking debut about a couple who falls in love . . . twice.Buy the book: Amazon
Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember. But he's never noticed that Reena even exists . . . until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. But then Sawyer disappears without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.
After: Almost three years have passed, and there's a new love in Reena's life: her daughter. Reena's gotten used to life without Sawyer, but just as suddenly as he disappeared, he turns up again. Reena wants nothing to do with him, though she'd be lying if she said his being back wasn't stirring something in her.
After everything that's happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?
