The Shadow Throne by Jennifer A. Nielsen (#3 of the Ascendance Trilogy)

Age Range: 10 - 14 years
Grade Level: 5 - 9
Series: Ascendance Trilogy #3
Hardcover: 336 pages
Publisher: Scholastic Press (February 25, 2014)
War has come to Carthya. It knocks at every door and window in the land. And when Jaron learns that King Vargan of Avenia has kidnapped Imogen in a plot to bring Carthya to its knees, Jaron knows it is up to him to embark on a daring rescue mission. But everything that can go wrong does.

His friends are flung far and wide across Carthya and its neighboring lands. In a last-ditch effort to stave off what looks to be a devastating loss for the kingdom, Jaron undertakes what may be his last journey to save everything and everyone he loves. But even with his lightning-quick wit, Jaron cannot forestall the terrible danger that descends on him and his country. Along the way, will he lose what matters most? And in the end, who will sit on Carthya's throne?

This is an amazing conclusion to The Ascendance Trilogy. In the previous book Jaron had been informed that Avenia has taken Imogen prisoner. But at his border, Roden is begging for help to fight. Jaron is torn, save the girl he has feelings for, or help his country in the war.

So that's all I can write about that otherwise that will give away about a million things. This book was a heart-breaking, uplifting, happiness filling, nightmare. But in a good way. So many times the author tricks you into believing things, only so have those beliefs thwarted by another chapter.

I would have to say that my favorite character is a tie between Imogen (because she's defiant, funny, caring, and sweet), Tobias (50% is his name and the rest is because he's funny and awesome), Mott (because he's hard core and awesome), and Jaron (Not because he's the main character but because of his personality and his willingness to give up everything for his country).

This book is great for anyone who loves fantasy and adventure.
