THE SHADOW PRINCE by Stacey O'Neal {Cover Chat & Giveaway!}

I love that I hear from readers weekly about THE SHADOW PRINCE novella cover. The process of creating it was a very personal one. I wanted something that represented not only my main character, but the series as a whole.I was fortunate to find Najla. Actually, I remembered one of her cover designs from a blog tour I participated in. She's great because she was very interested in my ideas. Really, we designed the cover together.

 The most important piece of the cover was the model. I needed someone who looked like the Rowan in my mind. I searched through hundreds of stock photos when I found the perfect guy. He was looking over his shoulder just enough to see his face which is gorgeous. The position of his body was important because I wanted to show Rowan's scars. Kalin, my heroine, described the scars in MORTAL ENCHANTMENT:

  "The sun glistened on his back, revealing lengthy thin white scars sliced haphazardly across his shoulder blades and down toward his lower back. Besides their faint appearance, they resembled claw marks."

Next, was the background. I wanted to create the fire court because Rowan is a fire elemental. The background had to be dry with very few plants and trees. I wanted the main colors to be red, orange, and yellow. I found a picture on Najla's deviantART page called, Apocalypse Fire. This was her inspiration for the cover background. The last piece was the font which was all Najla. I absolutely love what she came up with.

And when you put all those pieces together, you get this:

The Shadow Prince

Every sacrifice has consequences.

Sixteen-year-old Rowan has spent most of his life living among the mortals—learning to control the element of fire, impatiently awaiting the day his vengeful mother, Queen Prisma, will abdicate her throne. When he finally returns to Avalon for his coronation, his mother insists he must first prove his loyalty to the court by completing a secret mission:

Kill Kalin, the half-human, half-elemental daughter of the air court king.

Willing to do anything to remove his mother from power, he agrees to sacrifice the halfling. He returns to the mortal world with his best friend, Marcus, determined to kill the princess. But as he devises a plan, he starts to question whether or not he's capable of completing such a heinous task. And what price he will pay if he refuses?
