Reading in Public

by Andye

You may have read about how I'm easily distracted when I read.  So how does it make any sense that one of my favorite places to read is in crowded places?

I love going to restaurants, parks, malls, bookstores, libraries, coffee shops, the beach, the pool, or other places where there are tons of people who are chatting and going about their business.  (I swear, the people at my local Potbelly know me by name and what I'm going to order before I do.)

How does this make sense?  I mean, half the time I can't even concentrate on a book if there's music playing.  I just start singing the song, and reading the same sentence over and over.  But when I'm in a crowded place, all the noise just blends together, and I get lost in my book.

But sometimes I get a little embarrassed when I'm reading certain books.  I feel like some super smart person is going to come up and ask me what I'm reading and then judge me.

Why do I care??  Better yet, why do I think anyone would want to come up and talk to me?  Especially since it's pretty much never happened.

I remember being out one day, reading Jennifer Rush's ALTERED and folding the front cover all the way around so people wouldn't see this...

Because the book police were there and would be like, "Pardon me, miss.  Why do you have a picture of a half-necked (because the book police have southern accents) teenage boy on your book?  What kinda sicko are you?  I'm gonna halfta confiscate that."

This is only one of the reasons that I'm loving my iPad so much more.  That, and I can prop my book up and eat at the same time.  And let's face it.  The only thing better than reading is being able to stuff your face while you do it!

How about you?  Do you like to read in public, or do you prefer to be alone?  Do you ever get embarrassed by what you're reading?

Am I alone???  TALK TO ME!

But I do do that with my hardcovers so they don't get messed up!!

  3. I get so jealous of people who can read in public, I always try while waiting for the bus but probably only get two pages (and it's about a 20 minute wait). I just can't let myself get lost in a book like that, I've always wanted to but end up getting distracted.
As for what I'm reading I usually say I don't care but when I'm there of course I do. Even if I know no one will ask. Right now I have a book of Oscar Wilde quotes (since I can't read an actual novel) and I figure either someone will totally get me for it or be scared off.

    1. That's funny! Sometimes I actually go out somewhere just so I can read and I won't get as distracted as I do at home! :P

  4. I like reading in public as well, but I leave the half naked men and women covers at home. I like the convenience of an e-reader, but I've never been keen on it.

    1. Haha. Sometimes I just don't even think about it until I'm there, then I'm like....oops! And it's not just the scantily clad books, it's also books that I think people will look at and think I'm stupid or whatever.

  5. I mostly read in public places. On the bus, the metro, the tram, at school, in a diner/cafe, because due to school I have very little time at home, let alone my leisure time at home. I'm not distracted at all, I can get totally lost in the book (and forget to get off). As for the covers, I like to carry my phone, which I've got the Kindle app on along with Kobo, etc, on, but I'd love to have a tablet. It's so much easier to keep that on me than paper books, even though I'm really fond of them,

    1. Haha, I can't even imagine what would happen if I read on the subway. I'd end up at the end of the line and not know how I got there! :P

  6. I can read anywhere! I remember one time someone asking me in the doctor's office what I was reading and I showed this poor lady the cover for Rot and Ruin! I swear she looked at me like I was crazy :)

  7. I ditto the public noises all blurring together. That makes it easier for me to read without getting distracted. I try to always have a book on me because you never know when you'll get a chance to sit and read.

There are so many different books, and people have so many different tastes, so I don't mind showing off what I'm reading. I like making book-ish friends. What if someone sees my cover, has read and loved the book and decides to strike up a conversation? I do the same when I see someone reading a book I've enjoyed :)

  8. I read anywhere and everywhere :) I love to read in public... and I tend to really lose track of time when I do!! One of my biggest pet peeves is when I'm reading in public and someone who isn't even interested in reading will be like "reading anything good". And then I show them the book and am about to tell them if I'm liking it and they aren't even looking at the book or listening to me! DO NOT ask me about my book just to make polite conversation!! Books mean too much to me for that. Maybe that is crazy, but it drives me nuts. But I also hate when someone asks me what I'm reading and the cover is embarrassing... that makes me feel uncomfortable too.
