The truth.
We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.

And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

I just wasn't going to read this book.  At all.  I mean, I read The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, and LOVED IT, but all the things that people were saying about this book made me think NO WAY.  Not my kind of book.

People were talking about how they just reached a certain point and collapsed into hysterical tears, and I think I've made it clear, I don't like crying.  They also said it was much different, and more serious than Lockhart's other books, and so I just wrote it off.  I even gave away my Advanced Reader Copy.

But every time I turned around, someone was talking about this book.  Either they loved it, or they hated it, or more often, they didn't know how they felt about it.  I just got to the point where I had to know!  I had to know if I would like it.  I had to know what it was about.  I had to know WHAT HAPPENS THAT MAKES EVERYONE FALL TO PIECES.

So when Listening Library sent me the audiobook, I decided to take the plunge.

And I loved it.

I loved it so much!

I'm so glad that I listened to this one.  It just really helped me to feel like I was completely immersed in the story.  Ariadne Meyers did a fantastic job of narrating and really pulling me into the lives of the Liars.  I seriously listened to this book all day long.  I just couldn't stop.

The way that Lockhart writes just completely speaks to me, and fits for me.  I should have known that I would be okay reading this book, but I was scared.  I didn't want to be sad.  And no, I didn't cry (thankfully), but I did feel so many things.  And even though I kind-of guessed what happened to Cady, there was much more than I expected, and it was so moving.

There has been so much written about this book, but most of what I've heard is about the ending.  But I fell in love with the story from the very beginning, and loved it all the way until the end.  It had the romantic feel of The Notebook, with the tragic overtone of Gatsby or Inventing the Abbots.

It was beautiful.

I'm so glad I gave it a chance.

And I think you should too.

  1. I can't wait to read this one! Heard so many awesome things about it.

  2. I'm so so so glad you loved it! I've been hearing a lot about how the hype killed the amazingness of the book for some people. :/

    1. I think I expected to hate it, so that May have helped. Haha.

  3. I'm like you, I've been hearing and hearing and HEARING about this book and was like, nope. not for me. BUT the fact that you *listened* to it (and that you were in the 'nope' camp before) has proved to be the tipping point for me. I've just downloaded it from audible. And I've grabbed a box of tissues. I'm ready.

  4. Well, now I definitely have to go read this! None of the other reviews were very convincing really, but now you've got me wanting to know all about this. I definitely will. Also, one book I suggest you read is Jellicoe Road :D Just try it out!

    1. Oh yay!! You'll have to let me know what you think!! I have read her Finnikin of the Rock series, but I haven't read Jellicoe.
