Love Triangles: Love Them or Hate Them {Indie Spotlight}

Ah, the love triangle. You either love them or you hate them. Or you love to hate them. Personally, I like stories with love triangles. It adds tension and keeps me turning pages. I’m not always happy with who gets the happily ever after, but I still enjoy the story. And in my head I rewrite the ending.

I did a little bit of research on the history of the love triangle for this post. (Thank you, Wikipedia). Historically, love triangles have an obvious winner and loser. Romeo and Juliet is considered a love triangle story because of Paris. Modern day movies like Titanic and Beauty and the Beast also supposedly have a love triangle. But seriously. Belle end up with Gaston? I think not.

I’m not sure when it changed. Probably Twilight. Bella had a real choice to make. And she made the wrong one J. The change in what makes a love triangle to two viable lovers instead of one makes for such good tension and reading.

Because I enjoy them, I naturally wrote one into Kissed.  My main character, Naomi has to choose between two boys, Kai who is mysterious and gallant and Puck who is completely forward and bold. It never occurred to me to not have one. What I was surprised by was how passionate my readers were about the two boys. Some loved the ending and some hated it. All were very vocal about it.

The ending to Kissed was very easy for me, because I knew there’d be a sequel. But guess what? When I finished Kissed, I still didn’t know ultimately who she’d end up with. I knew her story wasn’t finished and I figured I didn’t have to know.

I’m working on the sequel and I have to make a decision. It’s so hard. I wonder if other authors have this problem.  I emailed my critique partners and asked their thoughts. Twenty email later and some not nice words between two of them who are on opposites sides of the triangle and I still don’t have an answer.

So I have a job for you. Go buy Kissed. Read it and tell me your opinion. I’d love to hear it.

  1. Oohh I LOVE love triangles especially those kind which you JUST LOVE both options (may it be both guys or girls. Usually guys though) It keeps you going, wondering who the character would end up with and whether you'll like it or not :) Kissed looks interesting! I might read it sometime (when I have a copy haha) :)
