The Real Reason for BEA

I'm here to talk about what BEA is really about.

I mean, yeah, the books are great.  And seeing people...blah, blah, blah.

But what everyone really wants to know is this:

WHO GOT THE COOLEST TOTES??

You thought this was going to be insightful didn't you?
(If you want to know more about BEA, check our posts here, here, here or video here.)

I totes love totes!!! Here are a few of my favorites totes that I got this year!

When I saw this tote from Harlequin Teen, I almost died from the awesome.  Also from trying to contain my rapping skillz.  No need to make people jealous.  I got this bag at the Harlequin Teen breakfast, and it was full of some pretty fantastic books, which was just icing (since the tote is the important thing).

It doesn't show well in the pic (because I was too lazy to actually get up and take good shots), but the "Epic Reads" is actually a blueish color. It's really pretty, and the bag is quality.  I got it at the Epic Reads Blogger party, where there was much fun had!  It contained Kiss, Kill, Vanish along with some cool swag (tea, tissues - in case of feels, notebook etc).

I grabbed this Chronicle Books tote on the floor at BEA because I thought it was so cute!  I love how it has little fun touches like red on the bottom, and yellow around the inside rim, with a red pocket inside.  These things make me happy.  Weird, but true.

I thought this bag was totes (yep) adorbs!  I'm reading Wonder now, so I just had to grab this.  Especially since it says "Choose Kind" on the back.  Can't we just all??

This tote was awesome because it's super thick and sturdy . . . and it tells me what to do.  In case I get distracted.  I got this at the Simon & Schuster lunch and it was filled with signed books from people like Scott Westerfeld and Becca Fitzpatrick.  Bonus points to Simon Teen for getting the books signed in advance, and making a tote sturdy enough to hold the awesome.

The reason I was so excited about this tote had NOTHING to do with the copy of Heir of Fire that was in it.  No, of course not!  I got this at the Bloomsbury breakfast, where we got to see the offices and chat with Sarah J Maas, and most importantly, GET THIS TOTE!

But my favorite tote of the conference had to be this one from Quirk Books:

It's just so simple and perfect!  The only way it could've been better is if it had said "Totes Totes" because, really.

I can't do this post without a quick nod to my favorite BEA tote of all time.  I got this bag at my first BEA ever, and it has gone with me every year.  It's the perfect size for all my little crap, and the spare book or two, and I always get people asking me where they can get it.  And I just respond, "YOU CAN'T! Hahaha!"

How about you?  What was your favorite tote?  Or if you didn't go to BEA, do you have a tote that you love to carry?  Links to pictures get you bonus points!

I TOTES LOVE YA!

*Special thanks to @Crystalbookland for asking me about my totes, and inspiring this post!

  1. I love totes, too! I love all of these! Especially the "Choose Kind" one, so sweet. I didn't go to BEA, but I will next year, so I'm excited to add to my tote collection! I always carry one from the Nature Conservancy that has deer on it when I go to the library. :)

  5. I love those totes! I have a pin that says "I love big books and I cannot lie," so I really like that bag. My favorite, though, has to be the Bloomsbury one.

I only have one tote, and it's a random Kellog's one I got at a Girl Scout workshop years ago. It currently holds the books I'm willing to give away. It holds a lot of books. :)

  8. YES!! I collect totes like they're going out of style. Quirk Books always has the most adorable and, yes, quirky totes. Just brought a pile (that I'd been hoarding from last year's BEA) to school and gave them away to my teachers. It was hard to part with them.

  13. What a super cute post! So many good tote bags at BEA. Personally, I think my favorite this year was the big red tote bag from McGraw-Hill. It was very sturdy and also zipped at the top so I didn't have to fear losing anything on the floor. AND it worked perfectly to bring my books home with me which was good seeing as how I never made it to the post office! ;)

  14. OK I feel stupid but what exactly is BEA? I know its like a book convention but what are the details? Is it for everyone? Just bloggers/publishers? Invitation only? And what exactly goes on? Conferences? Book signings? Do you buy books or get them free? I'm so curious and it seems like everyone loves it so I was hoping to get more information and see if I could go next year.

BTW, I love that Waldo tote!!! Too awesome!! :)

    1. Hey!! BEA is the Book Expo of America. It's (usually) in NYC and is for industry professionals and press (including bloggers). I'm not sure how picky they are bit I believe anyone can buy a pass, but you may have to have some sort of book review outlet, as they seem to be getting pickier.

On the last day (I heard it's going to be two days next year though) the doors are opened to the public for BookCon. The tickets were like $30 this year I believe.

BEA is basically a show for books, pubs put out Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) for reviewers/booksellers/librarians to take (free) and there are hundreds of author signings where the books are given free as well. I can't speak too much to book con as I avoided that area as much as possible. It was a madhouse. But the convention itself is a lot of fun and we end up with tons of books to take home. I'll probably be doing a BEA wrapup in a couple of days.

  18. So glad to meet you at BEA this year! And yes, THE TOTES! We'd be like, we don't need any more totes. We have the awesome ones. And then there would be NEW AWESOME ONES. I'm only bummed I didn't get the amazing Capstone tote! My favorites were the DEEP BLUE towel tote, the THRONE OF GLASS, and THE DARKEST MINDS. I also picked up WONDER for my co-worker!
