My Five Favorite Scenes to Write
5. The main character, Sunny, wakes up on the subway tracks
in LA with no memory. A note inside her pack tells her to go to a building
downtown. Once she’s there, nothing’s as it seems. I loved writing this scene
because it was surprising. Sunny had secret skills I didn’t even know about
until I was describing them.
4. Throughout the book, Sunny is being pursued by mysterious
assailants. There’s a scene where a man follows Sunny into a public restroom
and locks the door behind her. He’s armed, and determined to kill her. It was
one of the scariest scenes in the book to write, but I love seeing how resourceful
Sunny is. She’s calm and clear even in the most dangerous situations.
3. Sunny keeps having dreams and flashbacks of her life
before, even though she can’t quite make sense of them. She dreams often of a
boy on an island who she was in love with. Because Sunny’s situation is so
dismal at times, I loved writing these moments from before. She’s tender and
sweet, and she’s reminded what it’s like to feel loved.
2. The first few pages of the book were the most fun to
write. That first chapter helped determine the voice of the book, and it’s
where I realized I needed to be writing in second person. It’s also incredibly
scary—she wakes up on the tracks, a train rushes over her and she’s nearly
killed. I love writing high stakes scenes.
1. The final page of the book, which has a huge twist. I was
in tears writing it. I can’t say any more without being spoiler-y!
About the Book
A girl wakes up on the train tracks, a subway car barreling down on her. With only minutes to react, she hunches down and the train speeds over her. She doesn’t remember her name, where she is, or how she got there. She has a tattoo on the inside of her right wrist of a blackbird inside a box, letters and numbers printed just below: FNV02198. There is only one thing she knows for sure: people are trying to kill her.
On the run for her life, she tries to untangle who she is and what happened to the girl she used to be. Nothing and no one are what they appear to be. But the truth is more disturbing than she ever imagined.
The Maze Runner series meets Code Name Verity, Blackbird is relentless and action-packed, filled with surprising twists.
