Interview with Kami Garcia, Author of Unmarked

Hey there booklandia! Today we're incredibly excited to be able to share this interview that Anna did with Kami Garcia, author of the Legion Series as well as the Beautiful Creatures series.  Anna is a HUGE fan of Unbreakable and Unmarked so she jumped at the opportunity to be able to get some of her burning questions answered. Make sure you check out her review for UNBREAKABLE here!

Anna: Okay, I just have to ask, are you team Jared or team Lukas?

Kami: Team Jared. Usually, boys that are hard to love also love the hardest.

A: Who are your favorite authors and why?

K: Anne Rice, Stephen King, and Ray Bradbury are my favorites. Anne Rice is the queen of urban fantasy, on an epic scale that spans generations. Stephen King has an imagination that I wouldn’t want to be trapped in, because he writes the kind of psychological horror that feels completely real. Ray Bradbury is the reason I love science fiction—I actually collect copies of Fahrenheit 451. I’m like Mel Gibson’s crazy character in Conspiracy Theory, who is compelled to buy copies of The Catcher in the Rye; whenever I see a copy of Fahrenheit 451, I have to buy it.

Choosing my favorite YA authors is like asking me to pick my favorite flavor of ice cream at Baskin Robbins. I’m going to cheat and share some of my favorite YA books instead (but this is an incomplete list):

·      The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
·      Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
·      Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins
·      If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Urban Fantasy
·      White Crow by Marcus Sedgwick
·      Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr
·      The Curseworkers Series by Holly Black
·      Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Science Fiction/Post-Apocalyptic
·      Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi
·      Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
·      The White Mountains by John Christopher
·      Quarantine: The Loners by Lex Thomas

·      Fire by Kristen Cashore
·      The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
·      Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
·      The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner
·      Abarat by Clive Barker

A: Do you have a writing ritual? If so, please explain.

K: I don’t really have a writing ritual as much as must-haves. I always wear gigantic noise-cancelling headphones, I require obscene amounts of Diet Coke or Diet Dr. Pepper with tons of ice, and normally I’d say my laptop. But in the last six months I’ve been writing longhand in five-subject notebooks in an effort to write faster. So now the quest is on for the perfect pen.

A: What made you write about Kennedy, Lukas, and Jared?

K: I was interested in writing about identical twins because I wanted to explore the idea of choosing a person solely on the way you connect with them emotionally. In the Legion Series, there isn’t really a love triangle. If you read UNBREAKABLE, you know pretty quickly who Kennedy has feelings for—and so does she. But there is something interesting about two people who look exactly alike and the dynamic that brings out in their relationship to each other and other people.

A: What is your favorite movie and why?

K: For someone who loves books as much as I do, I also watch a lot of television and movies. So trying to choose a favorite would probably result in another list. But I do have a weird relationship to certain movies, where I literally can’t turn them off if I start watching them. Watch these at your own peril: The Day After Tomorrow, The Fast and the Furious (any of them except Tokyo Drift), Volcano, Urban Cowboy, and Rocky.

A: Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?

K: Flannery O’Connor. She’s the greatest Southern writer of all time, and I’d like to hang out with her and her peacocks (which says a lot, because I’m scared of birds).

A: Which actress would you like to see as Kennedy?

K: It’s a hard question because for me, Kennedy is a real person, who just happens to live in my head. But on Tumblr, the fans really like Alexis Bledel.

Thanks so much, Kami, for taking the time to chat with us!

He is here... and he could be anyone.

Kennedy Waters lives in a world where vengeance spirits kill, ghosts keep secrets, and a demon walks among us–a demon she accidentally set free.

Now Kennedy and the other Legion members–Alara, Priest, Lukas, and Jared–have to hunt him down. As they learn more about the history of the Legion and the Illuminati, Kennedy realizes that the greatest mystery of all does not belong to any secret order, but to her own family. With the clock ticking and the life of someone she loves hanging in the balance, Kennedy has to ask the question she fears most: what is it about her past that has left her Unmarked?
