The Winner's Crime Read-Along & Giveaway (Ch. 11-20)

Today we're talking about chapters 11-20:

I swear this entire book is breaking my heart, but doing it so poetically. We start in the library with Arin and Kestrel. This line just about killed me.

“Kestrel, when did I do it? I keep asking myself when I did the thing that was beyond your understanding. Was there one thing that made too many for you to forgive me? The lies—”
OMG Poor Arin! He just loves her so much and doesn't understand what happened. It's so sad.

After her talk with Arin, Kestrel decides she can't just stand by and do nothing. So she hatches her plan with the moths. This was such a cool way to communicate, so inventive.

The Emperor, of course, finds out that Kestrel met with Arin, and was NOT happy about it.

“You disobeyed me, Kestrel. You disobeyed me twice.”
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m sorry.”
The emperor released her, his thumbnail bloody. “No, you’re not,” he said. “But you will be.”
I hate him SO MUCH!! I just can't wait until something terrible happens to him!! Hahaha, is that terrible?

Then Arin kicks some major butt and gains some street cred (as my friend Steph says). We get to see more of Kestrel's scheming and brilliance, which I love.

These chapters were some of my favorites, where the point of view keeps switching back and forth between them, and you get to see them get closer and closer. Then there was the scene by the water. I was so afraid that Arin was just going to keep going, but then he just KNOWS! He knows her! *sigh*

Of course happiness can not last. Misunderstandings and misdirections tear them apart. Even though Arin gets it wrong, he also gets in right.

“I know you want his approval. I know that you’d marry the prince to get it. But your fa-
ther’s hands run with blood. He is a monster. What kind of person feeds a monster? What kind of person loves one?”
And that is where I leave you. In pain and turmoil.

Just remember, you asked for it.

The engagement of Lady Kestrel to Valoria’s crown prince means one celebration after another. But to Kestrel it means living in a cage of her own making. As the wedding approaches, she aches to tell Arin the truth about her engagement…if she could only trust him. Yet can she even trust herself? For—unknown to Arin—Kestrel is becoming a skilled practitioner of deceit: an anonymous spy passing information to Herran, and close to uncovering a shocking secret.

As Arin enlists dangerous allies in the struggle to keep his country’s freedom, he can’t fight the suspicion that Kestrel knows more than she shows. In the end, it might not be a dagger in the dark that cuts him open, but the truth. And when that happens, Kestrel and Arin learn just how much their crimes will cost them.

Full Disclosure:

I tried to only listen to 10 chapters. Really, I did. BUT I COULDN'T CONTAIN MYSELF. This book, guys. It will rip your heart out and tear you to pieces, all while you're begging it for more.

If you're not sure about reading it, let me tell you I've read quite a few reviews that said that even though they didn't love the first one (HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!), they're completely in love with the second. So definitely give it a shot!

TODAY IS CHAPTERS 1-10

I'm pretty sure this is the most quotable book ever. I want to quote everything that comes out of Marie Rutkoski's mouth!

This book starts with Kestrel living in the palace with the Valorian Emperor and Verex, Kestrel's betrothed, while Arin is trying to govern Herran. They spend quite a bit of time thinking about how they're not going to think about each other, and we spend an enormous amount of time wondering when they're going SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN!

Kestrel has decided that she can not tell Arin the truth about her engagement, or he will go nuts and ruin himself. I know it's a hard thing to read, but I absolutely agree with her. If she tells him, he will die (and then I'll die).

So Kestrel goes about her life at court. She has a rocky relationship with her fiance, Verex, but after a few talks, and a little help at Borderlands, they begin to appreciate each other.

And then there was the ball. O.M.Geeeeee!!! *sigh*

Tears and pain...
