When I Don't Like a Book Everyone Else Loves...

Sometimes I wonder what on earth is wrong with me. Is it the expectation? I don't think so. There are plenty of books that are super-hyped that I end up loving right along with everyone else. But every once in awhile, everyone I know absolutely adores a book, and I just don't get it at all.

Such is the case with a recent UBER-HYPED releases.

Ugh. Here it goes...

Yep. The infamous ACOTAR. Let me first say, I adore Sarah. Like ADORE! I think she's an amazing person and an incredible writer. But . . . I've had this book since last November, and I've picked it up about seventy-two thousand times. Just ask all my YADC friends who basically wanted to slap me with this book.

At first I thought maybe I just wasn't in the mood. I mean it took me a bit to get into the Throne of Glass series (like until book two...) so I put it down and decided to try again later.

Over the months one person after the other went on and on about their undying love for this book, and over and over I picked it back up and gave it another try.

"JUST GET TO CHAPTER 27!" they all said. It was hard to make it that far. Really hard. I just thought it was pretty boring. I really didn't like Feyre all that much. She was just kind of dull. And she drove me absolutely nuts with the way she was always letting her family stomp all over her while she fretted about their well-being. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU! It just annoyed me.

"BUT WAIT UNTIL YOU GET TO CHAPTER 27!"

Tamlin was another character that just didn't do that much for me. I mean, first of all, he has claws. That's gross. And secondly, he's supposed to be so BA, but it didn't feel that way. All the action took place off-page, and when he was confronted, he cowered.

I finally made it to the infamous chapter 27. And . . . I laughed. I'm sorry. I know everyone on earth thinks they're so hot, but I found it completely cheesy. Not to mention the scene a few chapters before where he just HAD to have sexy times with some random girl to basically fertilize the land. I know, that's not exactly what happened, but still. I just . . . can't take this seriously.

I finally had to concede that this book is just not for me. It's not that I don't like fantasy. I love it!! It's seriously my favorite genre. I like Faeries, I like action, I like romance, but this was just missing something for me. Maybe one day I'll finish it. I hear the end has a lot of action, but to be honest, I just don't know if I can trust all you crazy people!

Alright. Let me have it . . .

For what it's worth, if you haven't read this series yet, you should definitely read it. I mean, I'm literally the only one on the face of the planet that didn't fall head over heals for it. So, go on

  1. I couldn't get very far in the book. :c I don't get it either. The ending won't make much of a difference to me if I don't like the rest of it or want to finish.

  3. Do you know how refreshing it is to read this post?:)Not that I have anything against it or Sarah J.Mass but the hype is a bit overwhelming, and all the reviews made the book sound too perfect.

  4. I've learned from Twitter that there are a few of us out there. I guess we're just not as vocal. haha

  5. I actually loved it until they went Under the Mountain. It just felt different from the rest of the book. Maybe because it was a bit horrifying. I'm not sure. I'm still undecided on my overall feel of this book. Thanks for being honest. I've been the black sheep a few times this year (ADSOM & An Ember in Ashes I was disappointed in)

  7. I never seem to like really popular books.
I was disappointed by the Throne of Glass series so I'm really hesitant about picking up ACOTAR :/

  8. This reminded me a lot of Throne of Glass. Only I actually got through Throne of Glass...

  9. I didn't even get to that point. Haha. I didn't like EMBER either. I'm shocked by how well it's doing. I haven't read ADSOM yet, but I was really looking forward to it. I hope I'm not disappointed.

  10. It does suck when you read something everyone loves and you don't like it. You start to think maybe you're the one that's bonkers. I haven't yet read ACOTR but when you said claws... yeah, I'm not sure this will be the book for me either. But I am now DYING to read to chapter 27 to see if I think it's H.O.T. or if it's cheesy.

I recently read a non-ya book that has not received a rating lower than 3 stars on Amazon, and which I thought was so bad I gave it just one lonely star but would have given zero if possible. I'm still wondering if I read a completely different book than everyone else or if I temporarily lost all sense and thought something spectacular was horrible. Some said it doesn't get better than this about the book. That makes me really, really worry. I just guess I should be worried about me since I think I'm the only person on the planet that feels that way.

I've avoided all the hype about ACOTR but I couldn't help but hear EVERYONE say it was amazing. Thank you for taking the risk and sharing your honest thoughts even if its legions of fans don't share your same view.

  11. I feel your pain -- I think lots of us do! DNFs are very rare for me because I don't trust my own judgment, I guess. I keep reading and reading because surely everyone else is right. . . right? This series never sounded appealing to me, so I am just going to skip it. Side note that's not about this book at all as far as I know, but how do people rate books highly that are swimming in writing errors like grammar, spelling, typos, etc.? I can not recommend anyone pay money for a book that isn't cleaned up, no matter how good the story, but there must be a lot of readers who don't care?

  12. Haha, most of the books I read are ARCs, so I just know there will be errors, and hopefully they're cleaned up before the final is put out there. I honestly don't think a lot of people notice them, or KNOW them, which is kind of sad, but not surprising. Also, maybe people don't want to blame the author for the editors mistakes? Who knows.

  14. I love you, Andye. <3 This review of yours is all kinds of perfect. THANK YOU for writing it and sharing it :D I love that you didn't like this book, hih. I haven't read it, but think that I won't like it at all. Sigh. And ugh. That sexy scene wasn't good? Yeah. We talked on twitter a bit, and yeah, not for me either, lol :) I shall try it sometime. Probably. Do not feel bad about hating a book someone loved. <3 I feel the other way, lol. As in, if I hate a book others love, I do not understand how on earth they could love it, hah :)

  15. Honestly that's kind of how I felt with this book. I kept thinking, how are people liking this so much? I just don't get it at all! Maybe it's not me. Maybe it's everyone else. hahaha. :P
