How Popular Is A Popular Series If It's Popularly Unread By Many?

I was pretty bored the other day while I was on my break at work, so as one does when bored, I hopped on twitter and tried to start a conversation with my lovable booknerdigan friends by asking a question, which was...

What is one series that you feel like everyone has read BUT you?
My number one answer, for myself, (as of that moment) was The Princess Diaries, because I think it's a rather popular series (I mean, it does have a MOVIE, errr two), but some other's answers genuinely surprised me. Not because they are pretty popular, or beloved by many, but mainly because they were repeated over and over. It shocked me to learn how many people hadn't read a few of these. I guess I may be out of the loop on these things, because work has literally taken over my entire life these days. *sad face* (seriously, someone come kidnap me from work and force me to read. I promise I won't complain!)

Rather than name ALL of the wonderful answers I received, I figured I'd compile a few of the top answers from lots of different people, just for fun...

Out of those four series, I have read all of the books in the series currently out, except for The Raven Boys, which proved to be not a "Becca Book". The other three are some top favorites of mine!

But then, I thought it would be fun to name a few other somewhat popular series that I have yet to get to...

The really sad thing about the fact that I haven't read ANY of the books in these series is that I own at least the very first book in each series. I actually believe I own all of the Falling Kingdoms books that are out, the first Red Rising book, all of the Graceling books, the first two Rae Carson books, and the first two Scarlet books. The fact that I own these books (and have for awhile) gives you a tiny glimpse at the ridiculousness of my actual tbr shelves (yes, I meant to say shelves. I have 3 1/2, thank you very much!)

I believe a goal of mine for this year should be to read at least the first book in each of these series. What do you think, internet buddies? Which should I read first? Plead your case well enough, and I might just read whatever book you pick next!

This original twitter question also got me to wondering exactly how many people out there haven't read some of these (what I consider) highly popular books? Are they not as popular if a ton of my friends haven't read them yet? Which other book series are out there that people feel like everyone has read but themselves? Lay them on me, my friends. I'm ready to add more book series to my way-more-than-over-flowing bookshelves! I swear I'll get to them eventually....maybe....hopefully....and if I don't, at least I'm helping an author and I'll have pretty books on my shelves! :)

  1. I've read most of the Princess Diaries books 11 times haha. They're some of my favorites and definitely a comfort read for me! They're super fast to get through too, 'cause of them being all diary entries!
Of the ones you listed here (that are actually on my TBR), I haven't read the Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy or the Scarlet trilogy!
Throne of Glass series is one of my favorites though!! And I recently read "A Court of Thorns and Roses" :)

  2. This is really true though! I hear about these books all the time and I'm just like, "well, I'll get to it later" when there are so many good books coming out and those I actually have an incentive to read NOW. Out of the list, I've literally only read Harry Potter (but DoSaB is coming in the mail soon), and heard of nearly all of them. Excellent point, Becca!

  3. My vote is for you to read Graceling. That's the only one out of the second group that I read. :-)
I haven't read Red Rising. I have to be in the mood for a particularly book whether it is popular or not.

  4. I am THE WORST about reading the first of a series, and even if I love it, I don't finish it out. This is particularly true of when the books are spaced out a bunch, and I get in there at ARC stage. The Grisha Trilogy is one of these (have on shelf but haven't read book 3), and also The Testing series, Ruby Red series, Daughter of Smoke & Bone series. . . all of these were started, adored, then left unfinished. And like you, Princess Diaries hasn't ever been started. Eep!

  5. Great topic! I'm waiting on Raven Boys until all four are out b/c I hear about the cliffhangers! I've read the first book of FALLING KINGDOMS and SCARLET, and have been stockpiling them for when the series end. I'm not really interested in RED RISING, but have read the others. In particular, GRACELING and GOF&T are all-time high-fantasy favorites of mine!!!

  6. I love this topic! My number one answer is the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, I've been dying to get to this trilogy but I've never got to buying them. Yet. Also, I actually haven't read anything by Brandon Sanderson which I need to change soon! :)

To me, popular books are books that not only have most of your friends read but that also have a really high presence in bookstores/online. And if you know what it is without having read it. I've read all the books in the 4 series you mention and I LOVE all of them. Especially Harry Potter, which will always be my #1. You should def start with Graceling, it's really fantastic if you love fantasy and it feels original. Girl of Fire and Thorns improves with each book; I wasn't impressed by 1 but I LOVED 2 and 3. Scarlet is different and amazing, I love hist fic and retellings. I didn't care for Falling Kingdoms at all but I seem to be in the minority.

  8. I haven't read all of these either. I have read HP, Girl of Fire and Thorns, the first two books in the Throne of Glass series, the books that are out for the Raven Cycle series, the two books that are out for the Red Rising series and the first two books of the Graceling series. They are all amazing. Really, really good. As I said, I have more to read :)

I guess it would be a great idea to read at least the first book of the series.

  9. The only one I've read out of the ones you haven't is Red Rising and it was AWESOME. I went into it not knowing anything about it (because I'd bought it as an ebook when it was about a dollar) and that was the best decision I think because I got thrown into the story. Some parts of it were a lot like other YA books, but a lot of it is so unique!

  10. Ooh! I haven't read Red Rising, Scarlet, or Falling Kingdoms, but that later was more of mix-up between back-dating and getting it on Andye's Kindle to get to me as I was lazy-to-boot. But I should pick it up now as I've heard such good things.

I don't know, from what you like I would think you would like Rae Carson's, a lot. Although I read it awhile ago and I STILL can't get over the godstone in her bellybutton. But the main character is Elisa, which is always a plus, and they got better as they went :)

BUT, as Graceling I think will be a forever classic, so you should read those (BTW, FIRE was MY favorite and Bitterblue was great--both much better than Graceling itself, but Andye would disagree).

  11. I haven't read The Raven Boys. I keep meaning to try it, but I didn't like her Shiver series so I'm skeptical. I just got Scarlet from Bloomsbury while I was in NYC, so I need to read that one. I tried Red Rising and couldn't get into it, though I hear it gets better. Falling Kingdoms is pretty good, and GoF&T and Graceling are AWESOME.

Also, whoever these people are that haven't read Harry Potter, are doing life wrong. That is all.

  12. Stunning post, Becca :D Ack. So many haven't read these books.. so heartbreaking. I have read a bunch of them :D But like you, I have not read The Princess Diaries. But don't think they are for me :p Though I aaadore the two movies. They are awesome :D But aww.. I wish you would give The Raven Boys another try. <3 YOU TOO ANDYE!!! It is a PEEEEEERFECT series. Truly. GANSEY. Go read it, both of you. Anyway. AND BECCA!! You have not read Graceling + Fire + Bitterblue yet? WHAAAAT. Those are my all time favorite books. Truly. READ THEM. Fall in love with Po and Katsa like I have. <3 Ugh. Stunning trilogy; the best :) Anyway. Happy reading and thank you for sharing this precious. <3

  13. I knoooow! I keep meaning to read it. I even got the audiobook playaway from the library, but it didn't have any batteries, and I am lazy, so that was the end of that story...haha

  14. You muuuuust read it soon :) The Raven Boys are just perfection. Gansey is the best boy there ever was. Seriously. YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE HIM. Blue is adorable. And Ronan is pretty fierce. By the third book you are going to ship Ronan/Adam, which is an aaawesome ship to ship, hih. There is just so much to love. Sigh. And the writing is beautiful :) You really should give them a try sometime. <3 But lol, I know all about being lazy ;)

  15. I need to read PD! They look super fast to read and I've only heard amazing things! But wow! 11 times?! That's definitely persuading me to pick them up SOON!

Oh I adore ToG and ACOTAR!!!! What did you think of ACOTAR????

    ReplyDelete
  16. I swear I say that on a daily if not hourly basis! Too many books too little time! I think HP is a little harder to get into when you're older since the first few books are technically MG but I definitely rec reading the whole series! And yay for DoSaB! (I still need to read the last one but shhh!)

  17. Oh I completely agree Linda! I'm totally a mood reader! Which is so difficult sometimes! But yeah, I really need to read Graceling. Everyone raves about it!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh Kristine! Preach!!! Totally feel you there. If I listed the amount of series that I've started and not finished bc of time, the list would be a mile long! I hate that bc I loved the majority of them. I just recently finally finished R&R and it was my fave of the series. I havent read the other two series but I did read the first two of DoSaB! Still need to finish it. Oh gosh I know! I loved the first 3 Unwind books but haven't read the latest. Im kind of not in the mood to read more of it just because so much time has passed since I read the 1st.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have no idea about the cliffhangers for TRB bc I only read the 1st one and part of the 2nd. I wasnt too interested in Red Rising but the hype monster made me buy it! I need to start all of the others though!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks Selena! Oooh good answer! I've heard EXCELLENT things about all of his books. I think I actually own Mistborn and Steelheart, but haven't read either. I need to change that soon too! :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Totally agree with you, Morgan! I think Graceling will actually be my pick because everyone has been picking that one for me! So it must be amazing! I cannot get enough fantasy so it's definitely a "Becca book". I love hist. Fic and retellings too, which is why I'm really looking forward to Scarlet. I was about to start them right before the last book came out and then I saw some neg reviews for the last book, which kind of killed my mood for book 1. I'll be picking it up soon though. You're not the first person I've heard say that about FK though! But I'm holding off on trying them until all the books are out. I can't add another long series to my list of books I'm waiting for. Haha!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Maybe I should just start with each first book of each series but how on earth do I choose which to start with?! That's the dilemma!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. You're making me want to read it so bad! I have it but I read about 20 pages and then moved on because I just wasn't feeling it. (I'm a hardcore mood reader!) But I'll def be trying it again soon! Thanks Kayla!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah her Shiver series was meh to me. Haven't liked any of her others either. I just got a signed copy of Scarlet from Mary so I'm itching to read it! But I'm scared too bc I've heard neg reviews of the final book. UGH. Red Rising was so slllloooowww at the beginning that I moved on. I'm hoping to try again. Everyone seems to love it? I think Graceling is winning me over atm though!

HAHAHA I KNOW. That was the #1 answer though, no kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks Carina! Yeah, I love the movies too and Meg's other books, which is why I want to read them! But yeah. I read ALL of TRB. I just didnt connect with it at all. Haha but yeah I'll get to the other books soon!

  26. They are super fast to read! Mia is a bit annoying now in the beginning books, 'cause she's 14. But I still love the series! Here's a link so you know what order to read them in :) https://www.goodreads.com/series/43768-the-princess-diaries

I loved ACOTAR! The first few chapters were kind of ehh, but after that I was so in love with it haha. Tamlin's my favorite of the guys. But I also love Lucien and have a love/hate relationship with Rhysand haha.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Aw :( I'm so sorry you didn't like TRB :\ But I understand. We can't love all the books :D But Gansey.. you must have loved Gansey. I hope :) Anyway. I do hope you'll like the rest of the series more if you decide to read it :)

  28. I highly recommend Graceling!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Scarlet - definitely start there :) I just finished Lion Heart and it's such a great series and each book is really satisfying in its own way.

That's such an interesting result of series that are perceived as popular but a lot of people haven't read. I think that probably comes out of series where the people who *have* read them are both vocal and voracious in the enjoyment of the series. Those loud, passionate voices can make it seem like *everyone* is reading something even if it's just that everyone who is reading it is talking about it :)

  30. Girl of Fire and Thorns if you want fantasy and Red Rising if you are in the mood for Sci-fi :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Good choices! I started Red Rising right when I bought it but it just didn't grab me at the beginning so I put it to the side. I'm hoping to pick it back up very soon though!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Aw Emmah! You rock! Thank you so much for that link. I'm sure I'll be needing it!

AGREEEEE about ACoTaR! It took me a few chapters to get into, but once I did, I was hooked! Lol and you sound like me about the guys. I was surprised at how many people I've seen "shipping" Feyre with Rhysand, because I'm all about the Tamlin! :P

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes! Scarlet is HIGH on my priority list, especially since I just got my copies back from getting signed.

Great point, Annie! I was pretty surprised about them all too. Of course, there were others, but if I named them all, it would take me forever. Ha! But each of these was named, at the very least, 5 times.
