• Describe your book in 5 words

Jump now, don’t look back.

• If you were an item on a Mexican Restaurant menu, what would you be and why?

I’m going to apologize right now because I only know the Australian version of Mexican food – but if I were an item on a Mexican Restaurant menu, I’d be a burrito, because I look calm on the outside but there are a whole lot of layers underneath.

• The idea for this story seems almost opposite from other books about mortality that I've read before. How did you come up with it?

I wanted to know what the world would look like today if people were invincible. I don’t think I categorized Fear My Mortality as science fiction or alternate history at first, but it became that way as I thought about how a world like that might come to be – if Eve didn’t eat the apple and people were granted immortality since the beginning of time. Fast-forward to now and the thing that could change the world, that people would fear the most, would be … mortality.

I also wanted to turn the usual hero story on its head – the weakest person is the heroine and she has to fight that much harder to survive. At the same time, I didn’t want her to compromise her beliefs, her sense of self, or her sense of justice. The other character, Michael Bradley, challenges her in a lot of ways because he’s one of the fastest, strongest healers, but he’s also incredibly damaged by the tragedy of her brother’s death by his hand – an unintentional death that Michael condemns himself for. They help and protect each other.

• Is there a message you hope readers will get from this book?

That morality and mortality are complex – empathy is a strength – and it’s okay to be different.

• If someone asked you why they should read FEAR MY MORTALITY, what would you say?

I think FEAR MY MORTALITY will appeal to readers who want to experience a fast-paced story with a touch of romance in an alternate world where people are invincible, but it’s a world that’s not too far from our own.

And now, for the quick-fire questions (which I believe are worth 5 points each):
  • Best book you've read this year: ASH by Jaymin Eve and Leia Stone.
  • Favorite food: Lasagne.
  • Favorite dessert: Apple crumble.
  • Favorite vacation spot: Home.
  • Best movie you've seen this year: Confession, the last time I went to the movies was … um … ages ago. Best movie I re-watched this year was Inception.

The future is bright for 16-year-old Ava Holland and the residents of Evereach. They don't have to worry about old age or even getting sick. In their world, humans regenerate, heal, and live for hundreds of years. Mortality isn't something to fear. Disease has been all but eradicated. Everything changes when Ava watches her brother die and he doesn't regenerate. Ava's genetics are called into question by the government, scientists, extremists, and Ava herself. Could her genes hold the answer to mortality? Is she an anomaly or something to be feared? Determined not to become anyone's guinea pig, Ava doesn't stick around to find out. She wants answers too, but the only person who can help her is 17-year-old Michael Bradley, the boy who killed her brother. If either of them have even the slightest chance of survival, they must find the genetic keys hidden in Ava's DNA before it's too late.
